Santa Clarita saw an increase in location filming in 2014 with the Film Office recording 502 film permits and 1,339 location film days, which represents an 8 percent increase in permits and a 6 percent increase in film days compared to 2013. The economic impact to the local community from location filming in 2014 was $32.2 million, which represents a 6 percent increase compared to 2013 when the economic impact was $30.5 million.
More than half of the location filming days in 2014 were attributed to television shows shooting in the community, many of which were from locally based shows including “NCIS,” “Justified,” “Switched at Birth,” “Chasing Life,” “The Bridge,” “Franklin & Bash,” “Jennifer Falls,” “Utopia,” and “Wipeout.”
Other popular shows such as “Criminal Minds,” “The Mentalist,” “Ray Donovan,” “Scandal,” and “Sons of Anarchy” along with feature films such as American Sniper, Furious 7, Scouts vs. Zombies, Ted 2 and Yoga Hosers filmed scenes in Santa Clarita in 2014.
Santa Clarita is an ideal place for productions looking to film because the area offers thousands of film-friendly locations that can double as almost any city in the world, low permitting fees, expedited permitting process, and is located within the entertainment industry’s “Thirty Mile Zone.”
“Santa Clarita is known as ‘Hollywood North’ and remains a top choice for location filming in the Los Angeles area, as demonstrated by yet another strong year,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “Filming remains a big part of our business community and local economy by supporting high paying jobs and hundreds of companies involved in the industry. We will continue to do everything we can to ensure our unique and beautiful valley remains a top choice for filming.”
Many factors have contributed to the continued success of filming in Santa Clarita, including the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program, as well as the City’s own Film Incentive Program and creation of the Movie Ranch Overlay Zone.
Santa Clarita also sees a substantial economic benefit from filming that takes place on certified sound stages, which does not require a film permit and is not included in the reported numbers.
