(From left) 11th grader Emilly Skolnik, her mother Jamie, and Assistant Superintendent Vicki Engbrecht review the curriculum of the new Hart @ Home program.

The newly created Hart @ Home home school program offered by the Hart School District is off to a great start with 30 local students enrolled in the program. An orientation was held on Aug 18, for the students and their parents to pick up their books, meet the principal and teachers and get a computer lesson on accessing online coursework. The students also enjoyed meeting other students in the program.

The students enrolled in the program range from grades 7-12 with many working as actors and actresses in the entertainment industry. Families are thrilled with this top quality Hart District program that offers classes online, plus all the books and materials required for each class. Ninth grader Jake Johnson, 14, who is an actor, is excited about the program. “I think it’s great that I will have access anywhere I am and don’t have to worry about forgetting to bring materials with me when I’m filming,” Johnson said.

“This is a very exciting time for the district and the families in our community,” Pete Getz, principal, explained. “These students are finally able to participate in our strong academic program and remain active in outside areas of interest.”

Two teachers, Lisa Craig and John Albert, will meet with the students regularly and guide them toward success in this program. In addition to teaching at Hart @ Home, Craig will continue teaching calculus and Albert will continue as the English department chair, both at Canyon High School. Craig is also a national board certified teacher. Both are looking forward to the opportunity to provide students with a high quality education and guidance through their junior high and high school years.

Hart @ Home students may also take a class or two at the comprehensive high school in their attendance area. Eight students are taking advantage of this option and have enrolled in Advanced Placement European History, English, science, math, choir, art and theatre arts. Students may also utilize the school library and other campus resources and attend events as a student of that campus.

“I’m excited about the possibilities with this new program,” Jennifer Davenport, mother of ninth grader Madison, 14, said. “It’s great that the Hart District is embracing alternate education methods beyond a traditional classroom environment.”

The Hart School District continues to grow and expand its education offerings to students and families and offers comprehensive school programs, an early college high school program at College of the Canyons, a continuation high school and independent study programs, in addition to the new Hart @ Home program.

The District plans to expand the Hart @ Home program and will accept additional students next semester. More information is available here.
