The National Weather Service has issued a hot weather alert for Southwestern California, warning of a heat wave with elevated fire danger Tuesday through early next week.
Temperatures will increase significantly Tuesday and will continue to gradually rise into the 90s, likely reaching triple-digits by Friday. The risk to heat-sensitive people is moderate, according to the NWS.
The heat wave will extend into next week across the Antelope Valley, as well as the warmest interior valleys and lower mountains.
Overnight lows will remain very warm across the lower mountains and foothills, adding to the heat stress in these areas.
While there may be some cooling near the coast over the weekend due to an increase in onshore flow, interior sections are expected to remain hot and dry.
The main fire threat during the heat wave is from grass fires that may spread quickly.
Long-range projections indicate the heat wave could magnify early next week, bringing the potential for critical warning level heat across portions of the mountains and the Antelope Valley.
The NWS urges residents to reduce time in the sun during peak heating hours and drink additional water to keep hydrated.
