A Canyon Country man was killed and three people injured in a high-speed traffic collision on Golden Valley Road at Dorothy Street in the unincorporated area of the Santa Clarita Valley late Tuesday night, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
Excessive speed and alcohol may be a contributing factor for the cause of this collision, officials said.
At approximately 10:50 p.m., a white Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Golden Valley Road approaching the intersection with Dorothy St. at a high rate of speed.
A tan Toyota Sienna was traveling northbound on Golden Valley Rd., within the No. 1 lane, entered the intersection of Dorothy St.
The driver of the white Honda, identified Wednesday morning by Lt. Smith of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office as Matthew Thibodeau, 31, of Canyon Country, made an immediate left turn from the No. 1 lane of Golden Valley Rd. to eastbound Dorothy St., against a red traffic arrow, directly in front of the Toyota Sienna’s path of travel.
The white Honda Civic and the tan Toyota Sienna were involved in a head-on collision.
As a result of the collision, Thibodeau succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the tan Toyota Sienna, identified by the CHP as Richard Oldhafer, 48, of Santa Clarita, and his three-year-old child were transported to Northridge Hospital via aerial transport and sustained major to moderate injuries as a result of the collision.
The right front passenger of the Honda Civic, identified as Katherine N. Powell, 29, of Northridge, sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital.
Through investigative measures, it was determined Thibodeau was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
This incident resulted in the closure of all northbound and southbound lanes of Golden Valley Road for approximately three and a half hours.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and assisted with traffic control.
The roadway was re-opened at approximately 2:15 a.m.
This collision is under investigation by the CHP’s Newhall Area Office. Any witnesses are encouraged to contact the CHP’s Newhall office at 661-294-5540. Officer R. Alcantar, ID 18024, is handling the investigation.

Here LA county wants to extend the drinking hours to 4am. WHY is my question. This now marks two people killed on Golden valley in less then four months due to drinking and driving. I really hope the voters take a look and vote correctly when this issue comes up. I also question the morals of our SCV city counsel. You are recklessly allowing more and more establishments to obtain liquor licenses. It is amazing how this town has almost tripled its restaurants and Craft beer/wine bars. Yet we see signs, hear radio commercials on “NO DRINKING AND DRIVING” LMAO just plan stupid.

From the day Golden Valley was made a through street it was only a matter of time before the first fatal accident in that area. Drivers southbound on Golden Valley crest the hill and start accelerating down past Dorothy to Newhall Ranch. Not sure if lower speed limits would help at all.
That road’s a big convenience for many people living up Plum, but given the topography this is going to happen again.
Now add marijuana to the mix!! Voters keep approving laws that are detrimental to all of us! Come on Angelinos…use your brain for a change!
