1976 - Horse turds and peace pipes: Acton Turkey War with AM radio jock Dick Whittington ends in a draw [story]
Turkey war

Sunday highs are expected to reach 110 degrees in the Santa Clarita Valley with winds of 5-15 mph. Temperatures should return to 106 degrees Monday and fall to the mid-90s later in the week.

Monsoonal moisture continues to stream across the Southland with a possibility of afternoon thunderstorms in the Antelope Valley and mountain regions.

Dry lightning sparked numerous fires Saturday afternoon in the Antelope Valley, the largest burning 50 acres of grass and brush near Highway 138 and 263rd Street East, in the vicinity of the Pearblossom Highway turnoff to Wrightwood.

Dry lightning occurs in thunderstorms where the rain evaporates before it hits the ground. The same conditions exist today for mountain regions and the Antelope Valley, along with the potential for flash floods and hail.

A hazardous weather warning remains in effect. The National Weather Service advises against leaving children, the elderly or pets in enclosed vehicles even for a short time and even if the windows are open; temperatures can quickly rise to life-threatening levels. Outdoor activities should be planned accordingly.

Locally, the SCV Senior Center at 22900 Market Street in Newhall is a county-designated cooling station. Hours today are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service’s current 7-day forecast follows:

Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 110. North northwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming southwest.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 70. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming north northeast.
