Hundreds of students from Old Orchard, Valencia Valley and Meadows Elementary Schools participated in the “We Walk Wednesdays” kick-off Oct. 3, which was also National Walk To School Day.
“The goal of the program is to encourage kids to walk to school to improve their health and cut down on our carbon footprint,” said organizer, 15-year-old Isabella Clark, a senior Girl Scout who is working on her Gold Award. “I was so happy to see how many kids participated and how much the schools, PTOs and Girl Scouts helped.”
The walkers/bikers received bagels, fruit and juice, complements of Noah’s Bagels and a “We Walk Wednesdays” pencil and were shown the “Golden Sneaker Award” which will be presented each month to the class with the largest number of students walking.
At the end of the school year, the students in the class at each school with the most students walking will receive prizes, complements of a number of local merchants.
“I am hoping that more schools will want to start a ‘We Walk Wednesdays’ program at their schools, so pretty soon we have the whole valley walking,” said Clark.
