LANCASTER – For a second-straight night, the JetHawks fought back to force extra innings but came up short in a 3-2 loss to Modesto Saturday night at The Hangar.
The Nuts scored in the top of the 10th inning to go back in front, and Lancaster could not answer.
Modesto (3-0) scored the first run of the game in the opening inning, but it took until the seventh inning for another run. The JetHawks put two on with one out, and a Modesto error with both runners in motion allowed Ryan Vilade to score to tie the game.
The Nuts answered right back in the top of the eighth, with Johnny Adams hitting a go-ahead home run. Lancaster (0-3) managed to extend the game in the bottom of the ninth. Casey Golden hit his first Cal League home run to tie the game, 2-2. Golden now has 55 career home runs in three seasons of professional baseball.
Things did not go Lancaster’s way in the extra frame. Modesto pushed an unearned run across against Tommy Doyle (0-1) to take their third lead of the contest.
Lancaster came up empty in the bottom of the inning. Sam Delaplane (1-0), who gave up the home run to Golden in the ninth, struck out the side in the tenth. He struck out six over two innings.
Both starting pitchers were great Saturday. Modesto’s Austin Hutchison tossed five scoreless frames, while Lucas Gilbreath allowed just one run on three hits in five innings. Gilbreath struck out six and only walked one.
Lancaster is now 0-3 for the first time since 2012. The offense has struck out 45 times over the first three games of the season.
Here’s the box score.
