LANCASTER – The Lancaster JetHawks opened their final series of the First Half with a bang, beating Inland Empire, 13-6, in front of a sellout crowd of 4,769 at The Hangar Wednesday night. The JetHawks set season-highs with 18 hits and nine extra-base hits.
Luis Castro put on a show in front of the home crowd, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and five RBI. His first home run came in the first inning to tie the game, 2-2. He drove in a run with a double in the third inning, and hit another two-run homer in the fourth. Castro has 15 home runs and 48 RBI so far this year, leading the Cal League in both categories.
Eight JetHawks had a hit in the game. Castro was one of four players with at least three hits. Luke Morgan led the way with four hits, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Ramon Marcelino and Austin Bernard each homered.
Lancaster (32-32) broke the game open in the middle innings. The JetHawks scored four in the third inning, four in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth inning.
Lucas Gilbreath (3-4) secured the win, allowing five runs (three earned) over five innings. It was the first win for the lefty since April 22. Michael Santos (1-2) took the loss for Inland Empire, giving up 10 earned runs on 12 hits in four innings.
The five-game series to finish the First Half continues Thursday night at The Hangar. Will Gaddis (3-5) gets the ball for Lancaster against All-Star Oliver Ortega (2-3). First pitch is 6:35 pm.
