LANCASTER – The JetHawks used a trio of home runs and a strong start from Ty Culbreth to beat Rancho Cucamonga, 11-7, in the final regular season game at The Hangar Thursday night.
The win was Lancaster’s 70th of the season, assuring them a record of .500 or better for a seventh-straight year.
The game was back-and-forth, featuring five lead changes in total. Bret Boswell homered in the bottom of the first inning, but Carlos Rincon answered with a two-run home run in the second inning. It was the first of three long balls for Rincon Thursday.
Tyler Nevin, who went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, put Lancaster (37-29, 70-66) on top, 4-3, with a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Again, it was Carlos Rincon with the response for Rancho Cucamonga (48-18, 83-53). He hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to put the Quakes in front by one.
Lancaster took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Colton Welker, the league’s leading hitter, went the other way with a two-run home run to right field off of Parker Curry (7-3).
Ty Culbreth (6-8) turned in a quality start for the JetHawks, allowing four runs (two earned) in seven innings. All three starters in the series versus Rancho gave Lancaster quality starts.
The JetHawks pulled away with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lancaster sent 11 men to the plate and had five hits in the inning to go up, 11-4. Rancho scored three times in the top of the ninth thanks in part to another Rincon homer, but the JetHawks finished off the win.
Lancaster finished the home portion of its schedule with a record of 41-29, going 25-10 in the Second Half. The JetHawks won nine of 15 games against the Quakes at The Hangar, in what could be a playoff preview. The teams wound up splitting four series in the month of August.
Here’s the box score.
The JetHawks also secured at least a .500 record for a seventh consecutive season. They have an opportunity to clinch another playoff berth with four games left in the regular season.
The three-game series wraps up Thursday night with Lancaster’s final home game of the regular season. Lefty Ty Culbreth (5-8) gets the nod in the rubber match against Rancho’s Edwin Uceta (0-0). First pitch is at 6:35 pm.
