Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley Newhall ClubhouseCamp Power Up Santa Clarita, a free American Diabetes Association summer diabetes prevention camp for youth, is set for the weekend of July 15-16 at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley’s Newhall clubhouse.

The camp is designed for young people ages 7-15 who are at risk for diabetes or who have a family history of Type 2 diabetes.

Free to all participants and their families, Camp Power Up Santa Clarita will offer an educational and activity-filled environment focused on creating healthy behaviors around nutrition and physical activity.

Campers will be supervised by health professionals with expertise in diabetes and will interact with trained counselors who serve as positive role models. Campers will learn new healthy behaviors with a proven camp curriculum to help them live a healthier life.

To ensure the educational messages learned at camp are reinforced and supported at home, parents and other family members are asked to attend the camp on Sunday.

In addition to the weekend-long camp experience, all children and their families are invited to attend three Reunion Events also hosted at the Boys & Girls Club in Newhall.

These events will include additional educational and fun physical activity experiences for both parents and children, as well as the opportunity to connect with other families and friends made at camp.

SCV Camp Power Up drop-off time on July 15-16 is 8 a.m., with pickup between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita’s Newhall Clubhouse is located at 24909 Newhall Avenue, Newhall 91321.

Due to limited space, it’s important to register early. Please visit the Camp Power Up website at www.diabetes.org/camppowerupsantaclarita for registration and additional information or call (323) 966-2890.

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and put on Metformin on June 26th, 2016. I started the ADA diet and followed it 100% for a few weeks and could not get my blood sugar to go below 140. Finally i began to panic and called my doctor, he told me to get used to it. He said I would be on metformin my whole life and eventually insulin. At that point i knew something wasn’t right and began to do a lot of research. Then I found Lisa’s diabetes story (google ” HOW EVER I FREED MYSELF FROM THE DIABETES ” ) I read that article from end to end because everything the writer was saying made absolute sense. I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100 and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70’s and the 80’s. My doctor took me off the metformin after just three week of being on this lifestyle change. I have lost over 30 pounds and 6+ inches around my waist in a month. The truth is we can get off the drugs and help myself by trying natural methods
