SCVTV announced this week the hiring of a new production manager, Kristofer Kelso, who will be taking the reins of Santa Clarita’s only local television station this month.

Kelso will succeed Megan Perez, who has held the top SCVTV staff position since the TV station came under nonprofit management Jan. 1, 2009. Perez announced her plans in late 2014 to relocate to Guam with her husband, Tim.

“Six years ago we had three cameras and a couple of computers and one employee – Megan,” said SCVTV CEO Leon Worden. “Look how we’ve grown under her leadership. She went from being our only camera operator to managing a team of employees, contractors and volunteers who do amazing work for our schools, our city, our nonprofit organizations and the community.

“Most importantly, Megan created a successful operation that she can hand over to someone else,” Worden said.

Kelso is no stranger to SCVTV, having worked both on a contract basis and earlier as a student in COC’s Media Arts department.

Kelso worked for 14 years with the YMCA, including 1o of those years with the Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA. He is a CSUN graduate who lives in Canyon Country with his wife and two children.

“I think the enthusiasm and effort we’ve seen from Kris Kelso whenever we’ve worked with him will be contagious,” Worden said. “It’s a perfectly matched skill set: production ability plus experience in the nonprofit world.”

Kelso comes to SCVTV after two seasons of production work with “The Celebrity Apprentice,” a season with “Hell’s Kitchen” and various film and digital projects working as assistant director and production coordinator, among other positions. He recently worked on commercials for Walmart, Hyundai, Honda, Allstate Insurance and Cosmo Body.

“Losing Megan Perez is a huge loss for the station and the community in SCV,” Kelso said. “Her commitment to this community and station are second to none, and she will be greatly missed.”

“I am excited to step in and see where the staff, volunteers and the community can take SCVTV,” he said.

Said Perez: “I am excited for the future of SCVTV. Kelso’s experience working with nonprofit organizations, coupled with his love for the Santa Clarita and his talents in video production mean that great things are on the horizon for local television in the valley.”

SCVTV is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation that operates the Santa Clarita Valley’s public-education-government television channels (Time Warner Cable Channel 20 and AT&T U-verse channel 99). The organization also operates several websites including SCVNews.com, SCVTV.com and SCVHistory.com.

  19. Congratulations to Kristof, and to Megan Perez and husband Tim for making an awesome lifestyle change. I love you both and will miss you, but wish you nothing but the best. The story here did not mention your stellar work on ‘House Blend with Stephen K. Peeples’ co-producing with me the past 5 years, 57 original shows and 12 best-ofs, and how much the show has meant to exposing and promoting local music. So I will. ;) I couldn’t have asked for a better creative and production partner. But I look forward to Season 6 when we start taping in the fall, and we will carry on the mission. My sense is Kelso will get it wired pretty quickly and we’ll have fun creating a great show, too. Tyler Kulesz our sound whiz and our gang of volunteer AD’s and camera ops will help make a smooth transition. But we will from Season 6 forward list Megan as show co-creator (which she was/is/did) and co-producer emeritus in the end roll!

  20. Congrats Kris!! Great write up!

No, she created House Blend, not co-creator!

Congratulations and good luck, Kris. I really appreciate the web sites and Channel 20’s programs on local history. This is a great asset to Santa Clarita.

The 76.6-mile-long Antelope Valley Line has the third-highest ridership in Metrolink’s system with an estimated average of 9,000 passengers daily. However, the uneven terrain and single-tracking along the line in some areas forces trains to travel at a slower speed which results in an estimated travel time of approximately one hour between Santa Clarita and Union Station.
