SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In a clash between two Top 10 NAIA teams, The Master’s College women’s basketball team narrowly fell to the No. 2 Westmont College Warriors 66-59 Tuesday night on Bross Court.
The Lady Mustangs’ overall record now sits at 19-3 and 9-1 in GSAC play.
On top of snapping TMC’s 16-game winning streak, the Warriors handed the Lady Mustangs their first conference loss AND home loss of the 2015-16 campaign.
“I thought we played tough, but just weren’t able to play with enough fluidity on offense and missing Chay created a big defensive hurdle for us,” commented TMC’s eighth-year head coach Dan Waldeck. “We have been a great defensive team all year, so to be even in the game was good, but we must defend the lane much better.”
After four tightly contested quarters (10-14, 17-11, 13-22, 18-18), TMC went 25-66 (38%) from the field, 4-16 (25%) from behind the arc, and 10-14 (56%) from the charity stripe. Collectively, the Lady Mustangs yanked down 40 rebounds, produced nine assists, and tallied six blocks and steals.
Megan Lindsley (Vancouver, WA) paced TMC’s scoring efforts with 13 points, while Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) followed with 11 rebounds. Notably, Cubello grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
“Having such a big change in our lineup showed with a tough 1st and 3rd quarter,” further assessed Waldeck. “I have no doubt we can compete for a championship, and to be close even with adversity continues to reinforce that belief.”
Despite the loss, the Lady Mustangs still sit a half a game ahead of the Warriors.
Looking to rebound from Tuesday’s loss, the Lady Mustangs now prepare for two road contests. On Saturday, TMC will travel to Phoenix, AZ, to take on the Arizona Christian Firestorm for a 1:00 p.m. (PST) tilt. Next Tuesday, TMC will travel to Biola University for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
