Closures for I-5/SR-14 Direct HOV Connector Project

Santa Clarita — The California Department of Transportation will close the lanes and connector listed below as part of a $161 million improvement project to construct High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV or carpool) lanes and a direct HOV lane connector at the I-5/SR-14 interchange. Closures are subject to change. Detours will be signed.

For the safety of the construction crew and motorists, please be attentive to closures, slow for the cone zone, and move over one lane where possible.

About the Project

This project involves the construction of an elevated two-lane direct HOV connector at the I-5/SR-14 interchange and construction of HOV lanes in both directions of I-5 at the interchange. A direct HOV connector will allow for freeway-to-freeway transfers without exiting the carpool lane.

The project will relieve congestion, improve traffic flow, enhance safety and improve traffic operations on both freeways at the interchange. The work is part of Caltrans’ effort to provide motorists with a seamless carpool lane network in California.

Work began in July 2008 and is on track to be completed in summer 2013. Caltrans thanks the motoring public for their patience and understanding during construction.

Closures for I-5 Truck Lanes Project

Santa Clarita — The California Department of Transportation plans to close the lanes listed below as part of a $72 million project that is constructing truck lanes on I-5 between Pico Canyon Road/Lyons Avenue and the Antelope Valley Freeway (SR-14). Ramp closures will be staggered. Closures are subject to change. Detours will be signed.

Golden State Freeway (I-5) Closures

Closure dates: Monday, September 10, to Saturday, September 15

§ Up to two lanes of northbound I-5 between the end of the existing truck lane and Lyons Ave.
TIME: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Note: At least one lane will be open at all times. The most restrictive closures (i.e., the most lanes closed) will occur between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.

§ Up to two lanes of southbound I-5 between Lyons Ave. and the end of the existing truck lane
TIME: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Note: At least one lane will be open at all times. The most restrictive closures (i.e., the most lanes closed) will occur between midnight and 4 a.m.

About the Project

The project is adding a truck lane to the outside of I-5 in both directions by paving the median area and outside shoulder, and shifting the mixed-flow lanes inward. Median retaining walls and two short sections of outside retaining walls will be built to accommodate this widening. The southbound truck lane will extend from Pico Canyon Road/Lyons Avenue to SR-14 (3.7 miles), while the northbound lane will run from SR-14 to Gavin Canyon (1.4 miles).

This project will ease traffic delays, improve goods movement, absorb traffic growth due to population increase (both residential and commercial), and enhance safety by separating truck traffic from passenger vehicles.

Construction began in May 2012 and will be completed in early 2014.

Closures for I-5 Pavement Improvement Project
 Vista Del Lago Road to Kern County Line

Gorman — The California Department of Transportation plans to close multiple lanes of the Golden State Freeway (I-5) in north Los Angeles County as part of a $100.1 million pavement improvement project between Vista Del Lago Road and the Kern County line.

Closure Dates: Sunday, September 9, to Saturday, September 15

§ Northbound I-5 between Vista Del Lago Rd. and the Kern County line
One lane: One lane may be closed at any time.
Up to two lanes: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. the following day

The most restrictive closures (i.e., the most lanes closed) will
happen between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. when traffic volumes are lower.

§ Vista Del Lago Road on-ramp to northbound I-5
TIME: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

§ Northbound I-5 off-ramp to Vista Del Lago Road
TIME: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

§ Southbound I-5 between the Kern County line and Vista Del Lago Rd.

About the Project

This project will replace slabs in both directions of I-5 between the Vista Del Lago Road overcrossing and the Kern County Line, a distance of 15.4 miles.

The two outside lanes and outside shoulder will be completely replaced, and damaged pavement slabs will be replaced in the inside lanes. Additionally, the project will update drainage features, upgrade the wooden guardrail posts to metal, add post mile signage, widen the inside shoulders, replace broken approach and departure slabs, and repave ramps.

This $100.1 million project, which will be completed in mid-2015, will extend the life of the pavement, reduce maintenance costs and closures, and provide a smoother ride for motorists. The contractor is Griffith/Coffman Joint Venture of Brea, Calif.

Most of the construction will be completed at night to minimize inconvenience to motorists, though there will be some work during the day.
