Cell phone users have noticed a rise in telemarketers and scam calls. The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station issued the following information on its Facebook page:
Your cell phone is ringing and it looks like the incoming call is a local phone number, so you answer it only to find out it’s a telemarketer or a scam call. What’s going on?
Lately, many are noticing they’ve missed calls from what appears to be a local phone number on their caller ID. However, when they call that number back, they find that the person who actually owns the number says they never called them. Law enforcement agencies report this shady technique seems to have gained recent popularity with telemarketers.
What seems to be going on is that when a telemarketer calls someone, they “spoof” a local cell phone number in an attempt to fool people into thinking the caller might be someone they know in order to increase the odds that they’ll answer. What that means is that the telemarketers are able to hide the actual phone number they call from by replacing it with a random number they know to be local to the area they are calling. The person who actually owns the number they are spoofing then has no idea that their number is being used to call you so if you were to call the number back, that person will tell you they never called you, which is indeed true.
If you find that you’ve missed a call from a local number that you are not familiar with, it might be a good idea to not call that number back immediately. If it’s from someone you know, they can always leave you a voicemail.

So what happens if you do answer it?
This happens to me all the time and people then text me. They ask who I am and what I call for.
Same thing happened to me, people send me pics of their missed calls and my number shows up even though I’ve never called that person I my life
This happens to me 3-4 times daily. They keep calling from a number from Lake Hughes or Ventura. In almost every call it is someone with poor English and wants to sell me medicine as far as Norco, Oxy, Viagra, Sleeping pills and anxiety medicine. I’ve tried to block the numbers but it doesn’t help.
Most of the time I don’t answer it. Then I block the number. If I answer the call, I don’t talk or blast the car radio until it disconnects. Most of the time, both techniques work.

Happens all the time, a good clue is a 1+ before the number, I NEVER answer any caller I don’t recognize and NEVER call back, as stated if the caller is legit they’ll leave a VM
There’s usually a + in front of the area code… block those numbers.
Yup!! If you do answer just say Who is this?? If they do something lame like drop phone and say Can you hear me? Just hang up. You can shout expletive about the persons mother tho. Lol
Exactly why I never answer calls I don’t know like they said if they really want to talk to me they will leave me a voicemail
