Following the conclusion of another successful men’s soccer campaign that landed The Master’s College a berth in the GSAC championship game, the team has garnered a couple of postseason honors that display athletes who perform in the classroom as well as on the field.
Headlining the group is freshman forward Humphrey Mahowa (Malawi, Africa) who earned NAIA All-American honorable mention accolades after posting conference-highs of 13 goals and 29 points while being named GSAC Player of the Year.
Meanwhile, senior midfielder Darren Lightfoot (Colorado Springs, CO) earned a double off the pitch after being named both a GSAC Scholar Athlete and a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete. It was the second year in a row that Lightfoot earned both honors.
To be nominated by an institution’s head coach or Sports Information Director for both conference and national scholar-athlete honors, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale and must have achieved junior academic status to qualify for the honor.
After advancing to the conference championship game, the men’s soccer team finished the 2014 campaign with an 11-9-1 record, including a 5-4-1 mark in the GSAC.
