The Master’s University Track & Field team had a busy past few days, competing in three different meets Thursday through Saturday. That didn’t stop the Mustangs from setting several program records and qualifying multiple athletes for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Master’s took part in the Adams/Klein Combined Events at Westmont College on Thursday and Friday, with Eli Szumera (5,401 points – men’s decathlon) setting a new program record. Micaiah Scott (4,009 points women’s heptathlon) was just 15 points off the school record, but hit the national-qualifying mark.
The Mustangs then raced in the UCLA Bob Larsen Distance Carnival on Friday, where Ellen Palmgren (4:29.44 – women’s 1500 meters) and Davis Boggess (4:11.99 – men’s mile) broke program records.
Anthony Ghiorso (4:12.97) and Zach Garey (4:18.21) finished behind Boggess to run the second and third-fastest mile times in program history.
Later, the trio of Wesley Methum (29:29.30), Brint Laubach (30:01.44) and Daniel Rush (30:37.10) all qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the men’s 10,000 meters with ‘A’ Standard times. Those three times rank second, third and fourth in program history.
Hannah Fredericks ran the second-fastest 5,000-meter time by a Mustang ever, qualifying herself for nationals with an ‘A’ standard and personal-best time of 16:45.34. The only time run faster than that in program history was by national champion Karis Frankian.
“It was one of the most historic nights we’ve had in the history of the program,” Master’s Head Coach Zach Schroeder said of TMU’s performance at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival. “We are very thankful the Lord granted us such incredible performances and for the opportunity to represent Him at UCLA.”
Then at the Westmont Classic on Saturday, the men’s 4×800 meter relay team of Andrew Cross, Garey, Boggess and Ghiorso automatically qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with an ‘A’ standard time of 7:37.50, which also set a new program record.
Caleb Pouliot won the men’s pole vault, reaching an ‘A’ standard mark with a lifetime best vault of 4.80 meters.
Master’s returns to competition on April 9 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite in Claremont.
