LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Master’s College volleyball squad rolled over the Concordia Cavaliers Friday night in three sets(25-19, 25-15, 25-19) and left the Biola Summer Slam tournament undefeated. With the win, the Mustangs overall season record has been lifted to 5-0.
TMC’s Sam Dougherty (Madera, CA) notched 14 kills while teammate Rachel Taylor (Sun Valley, CA) followed with 13. Alyssa Gergins (Woodland Hills, CA) contributed with 40 assists, and the team’s starting Libero, Rebeca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA), provided a team high 18 digs.
Early in set one, the Cavaliers lead the Mustangs until a kill by Rachel Taylor tied the game at 7-7. The Mustangs would then go on a 9-2 run and extended their lead to 16-9. However, Concordia showed new life as they cut the Mustangs lead to two and trailed TMC 19-17. The Mustangs then tightened their defense and claimed the first set 25-19 with a decisive kill by Rachel Taylor. On top of her previously mentioned 13 kills, Taylor finished the night with 15 digs and a .323 hitting percentage.
Mustang coach Bobby Blanken’s team controlled the second set and never let up. Samantha Dougherty made her presence known as she contributed to five separate kills for the Mustangs. Concordia committed six service errors and five attack errors which aided the Mustangs to a 25-15 victory.
Set three proved a challenge for TMC as the squad got off to a noticeably slow start. After eight ties and eight lead changes, the Mustangs ended the set and match with 6-0 run as Alyssa Gergins closed the night with a kill that sealed the match at 25-19.
Using the next two days to rest, Coach Blanken and his red-hot Mustangs will be back in action at home on Monday night, August 27, against the La Sierra University Golden Eagles. Match time is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
