Three new displays of classic memorabilia will be added to the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio’s museum extensive collection during the upcoming 20th annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival at the storied movie ranch.
One new display will honor the career of veteran Western character actor, stuntman and musician Taylor “Cactus Mack” McPeters. Mack, along with cousin and fellow actor Glen Strange, came to the SCV with the Hoot Gibson Rodeo in 1930, and the 2 remained an integral part of the tapestry of film making there throughout their careers. Filming many westerns at the studio, and surrounding area, “Cactus” was also an occasional sidekick to Gene Autry, and ended is career, as did Strange, in the long running TV Western “Gunsmoke,” which will also be honored at this year’s event.
Also being recognized with a display in their honor will be the iconic television western “Deadwood,” which also filmed at this famed studio.
The presentation of the new displays will take place on Saturday, April 20. at 2 p.m. and is open to all in attendance at this year’s festival.
You can expect to meet cast and family members alike, who will be on hand throughout the day inside the museum at this event.
“Deadwood” actors Geri Jewell and Ralph Richeson are a scheduled part of the Celebrity Meet & Greet and book signing which will take place throughout the day, and fellow cast mate Gerald McRaney is also planning to be make it out for the 2 p.m. presentation.
Mc Raney, a featured cast member of the HBO series “Deadwood,” also holds the distinction of being the last man to “draw down” on Matt Dillon in the final episode of “Gunsmoke,” which filmed in 1975.
Inga Ojala, daughter of quick draw technical advisor, Arvo Ojala, the man in the fast draw opening sequence of the famed show, will be joining in the festivities. Ojala is credited with having taught the famed Matt Dillon how to shoot, and is world renowned for his beautiful holster designs.
