Hart dies

An updated California 2013 Green Building Standards Code went into effect Jan. 1.

In addition to the mandatory sections of the code, the City of Santa Clarita also adopted Appendixes A4 and A5, which lay out more extensive voluntary green building provisions to make our city even greener.

greensantaclaritaHere are some key provisions from the Code that may affect you and your community:

  • Construction waste reduction, disposal and recycling – If you are having construction done on your property, the Code states that you must recycle and/or salvage for reuse a minimum of 50% of the non-hazardous construction  and demolition waste. (Section A5.408.3) The City has a franchise for temporary bin and roll-off box services so make sure to use one of the following City-approved providers:
    • A-V Equipment Rental – (661)259-2155
    • Blue Barrel/Waste Management  – (661)259-2398
    • Burrtec Waste Industries – (661)222-2249
    • Consolidated Disposal Services/Advantage Disposal  – (800)299-4898
    • Crown Disposal Co., Inc. –  (818)767-0675
    • Rent-A-Bin – (661)250-5333
  • Environmentally friendly site design – If you are expanding your property or just want to make environmentally friendly changes, think about including some of the following: water permeable surfaces, vegetated roof, electric vehicle charging station, or fixtures that reduce light pollution. In addition, use as much recycled content and local materials as possible for all new construction projects (Sections A4.106 and A4.405.3)
  • Reduction for indoor and outdoor water use– Starting January 1st, 2014, all new  residences including additions and alterations must include water conserving plumbing fixtures that reduce water usage by up to 20% over current fixtures. Other strategies to reduce your water use include water efficient landscaping and irrigation controllers. (Sections 301.1, 4.303, 4.304) For more tips on water conservation, visit the website for Castaic Lake Water Agency.
  • Energy Efficiency – The 2013 Building Energy Efficiency Standards has both the mandatory requirements for energy efficiency for all new construction projects as well as great information on how to reduce energy use in your home. Check it out before making any changes or updates.
  • Bicycle Parking – Look forward to more bicycle friendly buildings throughout the City including bicycle parking structures—such as bicycle racks and lockers—in all new nonresidential properties! (Section 5.106.4)
