Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley AWARDED $15,000 TO ENSURE ACCESS TO SERVICES FOR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Blue Shield of California Foundation recognizes the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley as an important member of California’s domestic violence field.

San Francisco, CA (August,5, 2014) – Blue Shield of California Foundation today announced a grant of $15,000 to the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley to support their capacity to provide critical services and shelter for survivors of abuse in Los Angeles County. These core operating funds offer the flexibility to respond to new demands and opportunities, so that the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley can continue to reach many of the most vulnerable Californians.

“As the state’s largest private funder of domestic violence services and prevention, the Foundation is committed to supporting strong organizations like

The Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley”, said Peter Long, Ph.D., president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Foundation. “Ensuring they have the resources to adapt and meet the needs of all survivors is critical to achieving our ultimate mission of ending domestic violence in California.”

The Foundation recognizes that reliable and flexible core support is needed to help the field drive even greater impact, and adjust to changes and challenges as they arise.

“Blue Shield of California Foundation is an amazing partner supporting our mission to create healthy relationships through intervention, prevention, and education to end the cycle of violence. Blue Shield of California Foundation has made a huge difference in California effecting positive change in the lives of women, children and men who have experienced intimate partner violence,” said Linda Davies, Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Center in Santa Clarita Valley.

This funding is part of a group of grants designed to empower California’s domestic violence services providers, and enable them to continue making a difference in the lives of thousands of victims, survivors, and families. The Foundation is proud to support the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley and nearly every shelter and domestic violence service organization in California.

Volunteer Spotlight!

Meet Norma Cardenas

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

I’m a single mother of three; a 19 year old girl, a 16 year old boy, and a 5 year old girl. I have a BA in linguistics from CSUN and I am a Professional Interpreter in English, Spanish, French and Italian.  I’m a member of Zonta International.

Why did you decide to start working with the DVC?

As a survivor of Domestic Violence, I always felt a need to help other women in need because I felt so helpless and alone during my struggle. I knew that if I had the resources and support needed during that time things would have been a lot easier to deal with and definitely less painful. So when the opportunity presented itself to train and work for the DVC, through Zonta, I jumped at the idea.

How long have you been volunteering with the DVC?

I’ve been volunteering for a little bit over 2 months.

Tell me about the type of work you do with the DVC.

I help run the Spanish Domestic Violence Education Class on Monday evenings and the English Domestic Violence Education Class on Wednesday evenings.

(For a schedule of summer classes offered, click here)

What is the best experience you’ve had working with the DVC?

There hasn’t been a single event, just being there with these amazing women who, despite their daily struggle, still make the effort to attend the program. And not just attend, but most of them actively participate in our discussions. They don’t only share their opinions, but their feelings and emotions which is very personal and intimate. It takes a lot to open up to practically strangers, and these women feel a sense of trust and confidence within the group that allows them to open up and share and I feel very fortunate to be allowed to be part of this much needed team. I can see in so many women the hope we give them and the difference we make in their lives. And that only makes me feel that I’m doing the right thing and that I want to do more, so much more.

Do you volunteer or help out with anything else for the DVC?

For now this is the only thing I can do because I have a full time job and the activities of fund raising for Zonta. However, I’m constantly thinking about other ways to help, especially with fund raising for the DVC. Hopefully something will materialize soon.
