Personal Digital Archiving: Caring for Your “Digital Shoebox”
11:00-12:30
Presented by Mary Wahl, Digital Services Librarian at California State University, Northridge.
Long gone are the days when a shoebox full of photographs under the bed was considered sufficient safekeeping. In contrast, today’s “digital shoebox” takes the form of carriers such as SD cards, USB drives and online Flickr albums. But how dependable are these tools? How does one keep these digital files useful and findable for the long-term? This session will share tips and strategies for personal digital archiving, such as identifying file types, weeding collections, using file-naming schemes, and choosing reliable storage options. Attendees will learn the basics of caring for digital memories in text, image, and audiovisual formats, for long-term use and findability.
Archivist for a Day
1:30-4:00
An informal drop-in workshop where attendees can learn the basics of physical preservation by working with various formats, including photographic, paper-based, monographs, maps, and audio-visual materials. Under the supervision of archivists, librarians, conservators, and other archives professionals, participants will have the opportunity to use a wide range of archival tools and supplies, learn about suitable enclosures and environments for archival material, and ask questions about specific preservation issues.
