One man was killed after a shooting in Newhall Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred just after noon at an apartment complex in the 20900 Block of Costa Brava near Valle Del Oro, said Lt. Rob Hahnlein with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. One person was fatally wounded and the case is being handled by the LASD Homicide Bureau.

Juan Chantres, a resident of the apartment complex, heard two gunshots and screaming. He ran outside and saw a man, who he believed was a resident of the apartment complex, lying on the ground.

“(The victim) looked unresponsive but paramedics showed up and they tried to resuscitate him. He wasn’t moving though,” Chantres said. “It’s a little weird because these things don’t really happen around here, first of all, here in Santa Clarita. It’s usually calm.”

McGrath Elementary School was briefly on lockdown but the lockdown has since been lifted.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials received a report of a gunshot wound at 12:07 p.m. and arrived on scene at 12:13 p.m.

“We transported one patient by ground ambulance to an area trauma center,” said Inspector Randall Wright.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Deputy Ryan Rouzan with the LASD Information Bureau.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by clicking here.

We need more police presence here. My apartment was burglarized in November. Two weeks later my neighbors place was burglarized too. I checked out crimemapping.com. There have been over 30 burglaries around valley del oro in the last 6 months. This is not counting vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries. My car trailer was stolen at 6 am in front of my families shop on 9th st. and railroad ave. My friends at Mikes Plumbing had his tools stolen out of his work truck. There have been so many crimes around here that we need action now. I was told that there are 2 deputies patrolling Zone 6 which is Newhall. We need more deputies on the streets.
