The Real Side | Commentary by Joe Messina
| Monday, Apr 7, 2014

joemessinamugA few weeks ago, President Obama decided to insult Pope Francis by giving the blessed rosary beads given to him by the Pope to Nancy Pelosi.

The first insult: Re-gifting something that a leader of one of the largest religious groups in the world gave him. Really? It’d be like giving Qurans signed by Osama bin Laden to the families of 9/11 victims. Why didn’t he just save them and to include in his presidential library? Does he not understand the gesture and value? Does he care?

The second insult: Last September, Vatican Chief Justice Cardinal Raymond Burke said Pelosi must be denied communion under the law of the Catholic church because of her longstanding support for abortion. She was shunned when she went to Rome.

It doesn’t really sound like Nancy’s a treasure to the Catholic church. She openly states that she disagrees with the church’s stance on abortion. Really? How? What scripture is she using to base that belief on? Does she study?

Nancy seems to know more about what’s best for us as it pertains to healthcare, religion and abortion. Maybe she should be the Grand Poobah of the universe. Hey, Nancy, here’s a hint here for you: The Bible – yes, the scripture you say you live by as a Catholic – says (I will paraphrase) that if anyone adds a word or deletes a word, the same will be done to their lives.

It would appear the other supreme ruler – President Obama – seems to feel that “nothing” applies to him. Yes, I said “nothing” because it doesn’t matter whether it’s the law, social graces or just good manners: He is above it all. I believe he knew exactly what he was doing with the Pope’s gift; he just doesn’t care.

To further add insult to injury, Nancy went on to accept one of the highest awards bestowed by Planned Parenthood, the Margaret Sanger Award. Oh joy.

That’s an organization started by a racist, black-hating woman named Margaret Sanger. Margaret didn’t care about a woman’s right to choose, nor did she care about “female reproductive health.” She didn’t care about overpopulation. She wanted to keep  blacks and other people she considered “less desirable” from populating the planet in any way.

Does my pointing out the history of Planned Parenthood aggravate you? How about a few quotes from the award’s namesake herself, Ms. Sanger, as a reminder?

“(We should) apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring. Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race.”

Can you imagine if these words were associated with a Republican? I was guilty by association for allowing a person who is against gay marriage speak at a prayer event I chair. OMG. How evil am I? (The speaker was Brad Dacus from the Pacific Justice Institute.) I wasn’t getting or giving an award (unlike Nancy Pelosi). I just allowed him to speak about his personal life.

Here’s another gem:

“We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”

How do you who lean left and extoll the virtues of Planned Parenthood for “the great things they do” not know about this woman’s agenda? Personally, I think you do; you just don’t care.

Shame on those who know this and continue to support Planned Parenthood. They don’t care about women’s rights or health. They care about making sure the “less desirables” don’t keep procreating.

And last but not least:

“The most merciful thing that the large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”

She used the word “kill,” not me. Margaret Sanger said you should kill off a kid or two if you have a large family. And Nancy Pelosi is proud to accept this Margaret Sanger Award? Shame on her and those who support her.

Yes, I am just the old, white, racist guy whom the left attacks as having ideas dating back to the Fifties.

I say to those who embrace Planned Parenthood: you are the racists. You are the accessories to murder. You are responsible for more than 50 percent of black pregnancies in New York ending in abortion.

It’s time for you to just live up to the truth.

Excuse me? Why must you have mentioned the Quran? Such a biased article from a man with a pea for a brain. Absolutely disrespectful.

    • btw Joe, just say it out loud… you were WRONG about the resifting as the Pope didn’t GIVE the rosary to Obama – Obama bought it on his trip. They sell things like that at the Vatican, you know. The Pope gave him two medallions and his book- he gave the pope seeds from the WH garden. So… there’s one joe fact gone. And all the info on Sanger, her papers, and what she said is quoted above – even Cain got a “pants on fire’ rating when he tried this black genocide crapola in public. You think you’d have done your research and learned from his mistakes. But.. facts are not your strong suit. Trying to scare others, being a homophobic racist bigot… that might be better suited for you. Oh, and now with your attack on Pelosi … I must have forgotten you totally keep to everything in YOUR religion right? You never, ever disagree with your church’s teachings and follow it to the letter- yes? Right? Mhmmmmm.

  14. “”Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.” (Revelation 2:22-23)” – Looks like your Bible mentions killing children, so based on your brilliant analysis, if you follow the Bible, you support killing kids? Pretty flawed argument, Joe.

  15. President Zero is thoughtless. Next thing you know he’ll give a Queen audio of his speeches…. oh, wait….

  16. Actually Brendan, you failed to look for the appropriate context, as many skeptics often do. That section of text is what God and his angels will do to the children of the Jezebel, not what we are to do. As for the rest of these comments, I notice that NONE of them take Margaret Sanger, darling of the left, to task for her multiple directly, outwardly, and unabashedly hateful, racist statements. No wonder they’re just feigning outrage at Joe for his alleged insensitivity.

    • Actually Christine, the context wasn’t the point. The point is slamming a group of people for a misguided quote from 1920. You have the nerve to call people who support Planned Parenthood, racists, because of this quote from almost 100 years ago? Ok, then I can take an older quote and bastardize it into proof that your God is a vengeful hateful being. (I don’t actually believe that, BTW, I’m giving an example of the flawed thinking). And the Bible quote is in regards to adulterous woman.

    • Oh, my mistake, you said “children of the Jezebel” which is the adulterous woman.

    • Oh, my mistake, you said “children of the Jezebel” which is the adulterous woman.

    • Oh, my mistake, you said “children of the Jezebel” which is the adulterous woman.

  17. Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

Joe, you are as a “voice crying in the wilderness.” Prolly scarry for some to agree with you in a public forum; the risks are great. To wit, Brendan Eich. Who was merely in agreement with Presidents Obama & Clinton at the time.

    • yet Unlike Presidents Obama and Clinton, Elch hasn’t changed his mind. And UNLIKE Presidents Obama and Clinton he remains opposed to same sex marriage. I say it’s about time more people who refuse to treat people equally are called out for it and slammed.

    • Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

Erin. Consider someone who considers gays as equal in every way, deserving of respect, jobs, etc, but who prefers traditional marriage as more beneficial to society and children. Is this view acceptable or to be ‘slammed?’

    • I don’t want to get in a heated debate, but how can you say someone is equal in every way, yet shouldn’t have the same rights as you? Marriage is not a religious term. You can be “married” in City Hall. I understand if your religion doesn’t view gays as equal (if they have less rights than you, they are not equal). But religion doesn’t have a monopoly on marriage, it simply doesn’t. You can be married in a church and receive the Sacrament of Marriage, but Marriage is not just religious. And why would a marriage between two people be less beneficial to society? What does a gay marriage prevent? So these people can be “as equal in every way, deserving of respect, jobs, etc,” but if they join a union of marriage, their existence is somehow detrimental to society? I’m curious what the adopted children of gay couples would think? It would be interesting to hear it, especially on a thread from an article calling supporters of Planned Parenthood, racists and supporters of a Hitler-like leader.

    • Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

#1 Joe quoted the founder of Planned Parenthood; it amazes that no one finds her ideology, background, and statements problematic. #2 the legal benefits of committed couples can be provided outside of “marriage.” #3 some of us believe that, even if gays have adopted children, families are better off on the whole with a man and a woman as parents, each bringing unique talents and abilities. As we are seeing, this position has become unacceptable. The issue has moved now to intolerance to the level that one who disagrees must not work–the intolerance that gay Andrew Sullivan has now condemned.

    • Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

And maybe we should get back to Joe’s original points of Planned Parenthood. I kinda took it aside with a different example of intolerance, which he was seeing in his posts.

    • I love how you can tell people they have no right to marry, then you complain of intolerance when people don’t agree with you. So if a baby can be adopted by a gay couple or nothing at all, your choice is nothing, right? You sound like a great guy.

    • Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

I would not demand someone be fired for supporting same sex marriage. That’s the intolerance, Brendan.

    • And “Gay Andrew Sullivan” was talking about boycotting businesses based on the owners personal opinions on gay rights. This is an OPINION ARTICLE written for the sake of conversation. They have nothing to do with one another.

    • Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

So was Joe’s, and so are my writings here.

    • Saying you have no right to marry because I don’t like it, is intolerance, Rick. The difference is, I never said anything about boycotting anything. But you made it clear that you’re intolerant of gays marrying. This is simple stuff, Rick. Don’t try to condemn me for something only you are talking about. Who brought up Andrew Sullivan? Not me. Try to cherry pick your intolerance to fit your argument, but it’s plainly simple to anyone reading this.

    • Rick Wahler Rick Wahler says:

I certainly do not condemn you, Brendan. I merely disagree. My question is since I prefer traditional marriage, may I be allowed to hold this position and can I work? That’s why I brought up Brendan Eich.

    • Actually marriage is a contract between two consenting adults. One that comes with federal and state benefits – over a thousand federal alone- that can not be granted with a civil union or the like. So I’m afraid I DO think someone who believes this to be ‘ok’ needs to be slammed. Inequality isn’t something to be taken lightly. Just as people rose up to beat back the injustice of racial inequality or gender inequality, we rise up again.

If that means people who ‘believe’ (despite studies that show otherwise) there is some sort of magic in just a man and a woman raising children or believe (even though studies show otherwise) there is something ‘wrong’ with anything except heterosexuality need to be told what they believe is wrong, bigoted, and frankly inhumane then so be it.

I’m very tired of people hiding behind these beliefs in order to discriminate. Anyone in a leadership position should NOT be discriminating. Ever.

I’d also point out these exact same arguments were used during desegregation. That really should tell you something right there.

  18. Gee whiz, Joe, don’t you know that facts are not what the left wants? They only want submission to their ideals (whatever they have “evolved” into for the day), otherwise you’re just wrong. Wrong to point out their hypocrisy, wrong to use PP’s own founding words, wrong to call out their anointed leaders, wrong speak at all. Why how dare you even breathe?! Name calling, personal attacks, and attempts at silencing you are only fair, you know, because the left is all about fairness.

    • Time to check those ‘facts’ … I’ve cited them above and actually given context. Amazing how that works. Enjoy.

    • salon.com = facts LOL.

    • did you miss the pants of fire from PollitiFact? Pulitzer Prize winning, btw. And the first by FactCheck.org? Was it he papers written by Sanger herself that threw you off- also cited? Or maybe it was her institution that gave the context that had you all in a kerfuffle?

    • …and the stuff Joe cites as sources are………. oh right. Out of his ass.

    • Politifact is run by the Liberal Tampa Bay Times. Again, LOL.

    • Keep going … eventually you’ll run into a source you can’t argue with. Like, HER PAPERS THEMSELVES or say, the institution …. Love that you don’t like the pulitzer prize winning politifact though… says a lot about you. BTW, waiting on the sources from Joe or you… feel free. Somethings tells me your sources aren’t pulitzer prize winning, or from the actual papers the woman wrote in context.. oh wait, did you get yours from the Onion? World Net Daily maybe? Oh I know… BREITBART!!! Or um… gee, hard to tell since Joe never sources anything.

And the misinformation about the ‘re-gifting’ ?? Will he issue a correction for that?

    • Fact: Planned Parenthood is one of the largest abortion provider in America. Fact: 78% of their clinics are in minority communities. Blacks make up 12% of the population, but 35% of the abortions in America.

    • Sigh. FACT: Abortion is LEGAL. Fact: Planned Parenthood is purposefully in communities that need other options for health care for women that do not require insurance or big $$. They provide safe and legal abortions in 3% of their services. THREE PERCENT! Here is the breakdown of what they do: Planned Parenthood health centers focus on prevention: 71 percent of our clients receive services to prevent unintended pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood services help prevent more than 486,000 unintended pregnancies each year.

Planned Parenthood provides 585,000 Pap tests and nearly 640,000 breast exams each year, critical services in detecting cancer.

Planned Parenthood provides nearly 4.5 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Three percent of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortion services.

You can find that on the Planned Parenthood website in PDF files and everything they have to REPORT to the government.

PP used to be supported by Republicans and Democrats alike because the goal is to get good healthcare to people who might otherwise NOT have access. To make sure they are educated on stds and to PREVENT unwanted pregnancies from happening in the first place.

WHY ON EARTH would someone against abortion WANT more Unwanted pregnancies and not want to work WITH an organization that’s sole purpose is to HELP WOMEN NOT GET KNOCKED UP so we have LESS heart wrenching decisions like abortion or adoption to make?

    • and again- I told you were my stats and sources came from… why won’t you or Joe do the same? Where did you get those #’s Gwendolyn Sims ? If you could just cite the sources so we could all take a look that would be swell. I have cited my sources for every stat and info I’ve given.

    • Real Life called so I had to step away. As for my sources, please see the following and note there’s not a Brietbart or FoxNews among them:
Largest provider using PP’s own Annual Report numbers: http://lifeissues.org/PP/index.html >> And SURPRISE finds “Planned Parenthood is the largest Provider and Promoter of Abortion in the US.”
Blacks in the US population from the US Census: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html So I mistyped 12% instead of 13%. The last census was 12.6%. #sosueme
Black abortion rates from the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss6108a1.htm Yes, it’s from 2009, the most recent numbers available.
And btw, no one said abortion wasn’t legal. Try to stay on topic. Now would you like to quote some more salon.com or how about some msnbc?

    • actually the most recent #s are from 2010 http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss6208a1.htm?s_cid=ss6208a1_wRace/Ethnicity
Among the 28 areas that reported cross-classified race/ethnicity data for 2010 (Table 12), non-Hispanic white women and non-Hispanic black women accounted for the largest percentages of abortions (36.8% and 35.7%, respectively)

    • because a pro-life site is so much better… what is life issues anyway? Im looking for your Planned Parenthood stats but so far, just life issue links.

That being said, I’m happy if it is PP providing the majority of abortions as at least we know they are safe and legal. But as I mentioned, and cited, termination of pregnancy is only 3% of what PP does.

Which is in their annual report to the gov. and WIDELY reported on during the PP ‘defudin’ hoopla last election cycle.

  27. But Brendan, your quote was deliberately taking something completely out of context and making it sound as though it is something that would be done by a person as opposed to God passing judgement on those who openly reject Him and deliberately lead others astray. The difference is that Margaret Sanger openly stated that minorities should be killed, murdered via abortion and birth control and that this was the entire business plan of what would ultimately become Planned Parenthood. The left celebrates an organization that is carrying out that very work today and they celebrate politicians who receive an award named for the very woman who was so hateful as to call anyone poor and/or non-white inferior and unworthy of procreation. She was not a hero. She is responsible for building an organization that has snuffed out millions of innocent lives in the name of a cleaner race. Hitler would be proud.

    • Screw it, I can go on and on listing Bible verses where men are told to throw babies against the rocks, woman are thrown in the yard to be raped, etc. But I’m sure you have simple rationalization for all of it. There are incredibly horrific passages in the Bible, but most people can decipher better messages. Most people realize the world is completely different now. But yet you can quickly trash “the left” as racists who support a woman of Hitler-like status because of horrible things that were said long ago. You want to believe that anyone who supports PP is a lefty baby killer, go for it. Most of them probably view you as a hypocritical religious fool living in the dark. And spare me the “You’re taking it out of context” argument. This whole thing is based on an article where Joe compares a gift from the Pope, to giving the Quran to victims of 911???? And taking a person to task for their idiocy is hardly “outrage”, don’t flatter yourselves.

    • Actually that is why the context is important. Go read her papers. Go read what her institution says about her papers. Go read what the AA community that was involved at the time said about her and what that quote that went viral was ACTUALLY about. You are right. Context DOES matter, that is entirely the point.

  30. Leaving the FACTS (actually documented and cited) here and on the website itself: Let’s start with Sanger. Here’s Factcheck.org

Sanger, who was arrested several times in her efforts to bring birth control to women in the United States, set up her first clinic in Brooklyn in 1916. In the late 1930s, she sought to bring clinics to black women in the South, in an effort that was called the “Negro Project.” Sanger wrote in 1939 letters to colleague Clarence James Gamble that she believed the project needed a black physician and black minister to gain the trust of the community:
Sanger, 1939: The minister’s work is also important and he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.

Sanger says that a minister could debunk the notion, if it arose, that the clinics aimed to “exterminate the Negro population.” She didn’t say that she wanted to “exterminate” the black population. The Margaret Sanger Papers Project at New York University says that this quote has “gone viral on the Internet,” normally out of context, and it “doesn’t reflect the fact that Sanger recognized elements within the black community might mistakenly associate the Negro Project with racist sterilization campaigns in the Jim Crow south, unless clergy and other community leaders spread the word that the Project had a humanitarian aim.”
It goes on to characterize beliefs such as Cain’s as “extremist.” The project says: “No serious scholar and none of the dozens of black leaders who supported Sanger’s work have ever suggested that she tried to reduce the black population or set up black abortion mills, the implication in much of the extremist anti-choice material.”

Tells a wee bit of a different story, right?

And more this one from Salon

And one more for fun: http://www.politifact.com/georgia/statements/2011/apr/08/herman-cain/cain-claims-planned-parenthood-founded-planned-gen/

A PANTS ON FIRE from PoltiFact — wow.

So, Joe. That’s her own papers and those who KNEW her in the AA community debunking your theory on every level. Disagree with abortion all you like, but don’t turn this into some racial genocide that it’s NOT. As evidenced by my facts as stated above and vetted by professionals. Your evidence is..what again?

On to the President’s meeting with the Pope. First of all, the President did not REGIFT the rosary, he bought it for Pelosi while there. The official exchange of gifts went as such: They exchanged gifts, with the Pope offering President Obama two medallions and a copy of his apostolic exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel.” President Obama presented Pope Francis with a seed chest filled with fruit and vegetable seeds used in the White House Garden. The chest is made of leather and wood from the Baltimore Basilica, one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals in the USA. He invited the Pontiff to visit the White House.

You can check the White House press release for the actual facts. Facts that seem to escape you every single time you write something.

Now onto your assertions that somehow these people in power are undeserving of being called Catholic or Christian yet are deserving of being racist for supporting Planned Parenthood- the clinic that SERVES areas you wouldn’t set foot in for fear your white, racist, homophobic, woman hating self wouldn’t be welcome. Turns out, if you again, check the facts, PP is sometimes the ONLY clinic for women to get any sort of health care in an area and yes they provide things like birth control and some of them provide termination of pregnancies. Which, last I checked, were LEGAL.

As a Christian yourself I suggest instead of passing along misinformation about a woman and a black man you obviously hate, you look with in and read your Bible and think about why you are so hateful, vengeful, and clearly upset by these people unlike you who are doing good for our country by HELPING the poor and uninsured and supporting places like PP that HELP those not nearly as advantaged and privileged as you.

I also recommend you fact check, because these lies – easily debunked as they are- are getting really old from a man supposedly in a leadership position in this community.

Fact: Joe is quoting a women who said these things in the 1920’s? There is no relevance to her almost 100 years ago and PP today. And the Quran thing is incite full trash not even in the same ball park. How do you go from the Obama thing to everyone that believes in abortion is racist? The leaps of logic are amazing for such a small man.

  36. Thank goodness most of you see Joe for what he is. I had assumed most of Santa Clarita conservative nut jobs and I’m pleased to see this isn’t true. My faith is restored. By the way you can have faith in your religion and not agree with doctrine that’s why god have you freedom if thought.

  37. GS most of the care provided by PP has nothing to do with abortions which by the way is a legal medical procedure but provides wellness care to women you need to stop watching Fox News.

  38. I do wish SCVTV Santa Clarita would consider the continual misinformation spread in these Opinion pieces. Why do you want to participate in spreading it? I just unliked your page (I know- big whoop)
And the Dacus comparison? Frustrated to see that Joe Messina still either does not understand that the problem with Dacus goes far deeper than a simple “against gay marriage” -or he is purposely misrepresenting it.

  39. Very disappointed in SCVTV for allowing this extremist vitriol and hatred. We need to work on overcoming extremism.

What a boring old dead horse you are beating.

The first sanger quote is a quote on eugenics, not racism.

The second quote, unfortunately, is poorly worded. She is not promoting genocide, she is warning that they might falsely think one might assume they are.

This is the same old boring misinformation the right wing likes to vomit all over the internet irresponsibly. It is quite clear you heard from someone Sanger was racist and than just did a quick google search with no real thought or time put into your investigation.

“There is a striking kinship between our movement and Margaret Sanger’s early efforts. She, like we, saw the horrifying conditions of ghetto life. Like we, she knew that all of society is poisoned by cancerous slums. Like we, she was a direct actionist — a nonviolent resister… She launched a movement which is obeying a higher law to preserve human life under humane conditions. Margaret Sanger had to commit what was then called a crime in order to enrich humanity, and today we honor her courage and vision; for without them there would have been no beginning.”

  50. Bill says:

I just signed up to this page to keep in touch with what’s happening in our valley and came across this hate speech. If I wanted that, I can listen to AM radio. Funny, I see where he’s on our local KHTS AM station, figures. Nice image for both. I certainly believe in freedom of speech and my freedom to never use the media who decides to give this character his platform. Gotta love the program titles … “Fair and Balanced” Fox News and now “The Real Side” (both pretending it’s neither right or left). Goodbye to SCV TV and KHTS, there are far too many other options where hate speech isn’t featured.

  51. John says:

So you are telling me that because I had relations with someone in the past, I am racist? I prevented putting myself in financial debt. I was in no way shape or form able to take care of another human, and by taking a preventative measure, I am a racist…? Can’t one get the same contraceptive at most pharmacies? Does that mean people who have accidents are all racist? Why are you over genealizing? So did you even look at the other side of the story or take into account some of the good that comes out of Planned Parenthod? You need to move out of the S&S tract homes immediately. I will over generalize just like you do and make this statement: Saugus no longer wants you or that stupid Jag of yours. Time to pack up and get the heck out of here! As for everyone here that is in agreeance with this quack, good for you, everyone has the right to their own opinion. You did not call me racist, that chump did and I really do not appreciate that.

  52. Doug Truex says:

Your article is spot on !! Thank You. Funny how those not used to hearing the truth, are the same “loving, and tolerant human beings” that become the most hateful and vile when faced with their reflection. The truth hurts as they say….and yes, yesit does.

  53. Malcolm Blue says:

Speaking of re-gifting, I hope and pray that Goldman and MESSina will return to wherever they came from. There’s more than enough pollution in the SCV and these two add so much to it. I’m aware that MESSina is an anti-gay bigot. (I personally experienced it!) But for God’s sake get your facts Straight, MESSina!

    • Bill says:

The media that gives him airtime or features him as a responsible op-ed should be called out…KHTS AM and SCV-TV.
