[News Release] – At a ceremony unveiling BYD Ltd.’s first all-electric, 155-mile-range Rapid Transit Bus at its factory in Lancaster, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich applauded partners in business and government who worked together to bring the factory to the Antelope Valley.
“Just as the pioneers of Antelope Valley had a dream when they settled here, Mr. Wang Chuanfu had a dream when he founded BYD to be the world’s leading manufacturer of electric-powered transportation,” Supervisor Antonovich said. “Creating over 60 American jobs, growing the local economy, and providing zero-emission transit, this vital partnership shows how business-friendly efforts and public private partnerships can attract and retain businesses which improve the quality of life. BYD plans to increase its employees to 100 by the end of 2014, and 200 employees by the end of 2015.”
Supervisor Antonovich and his wife Christine first met BYD when he spoke at the World Economic Forum in China in 2008 — initiating the partnership that led to the development of BYD’s operations in Los Angeles County. Since then, BYD has become the first Chinese vehicle manufacturer to open a factory in the U.S. and has pre-orders and demonstration projects for its buses with several agencies including the Los Angeles County MTA, the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Los Angeles International Airport, the New York City MTA, Ottawa, Canada, and Stanford University. Additionally, state-of-the-art charging stations will be installed September 24th at Lancaster City Park and the Palmdale Transportation Center.
Conversely, Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it will move 3,000 jobs from Torrance to new corporate headquarters in Plano, Texas over the next three years. “While we are adding jobs in the Antelope Valley, California’s anti-business culture of high taxation and overregulation have driven Toyota out of the state,” Antonovich said. “It is imperative for California to adopt economic incentives and lower taxes to grow jobs and our economy.”
