The College of the Canyons men’s golf team took the San Dimas Golf Club to a new low in a Western State Conference match.
The COC golfers set a school record with a 15-under 345 to win the seventh conference match of the season.
Tyler Schwanz led four golfers from COC who shot under par. He had the low round of the day, a 5-under 67. Derek Larson and Luke Kristo each shot 4-under 68. Riley Hayfield was 2-under at 70.
COC broke its previous record of 10-under par at the same San Dimas Golf Club course last year.
In high school golf, the West Ranch boys beat Saugus by 14 strokes at the TPC at Valencia. Kevin Holzer from Saugus shot the low round at 2-over 74.
Brandon Dooley and Steven Moentmann were 4-over at 76 for West Ranch. The Wildcats won the match, 397-411.
In high school baseball, the Foothill League games have been moved up a day because of expected rain on Friday.
Hart plays at Saugus today. Valencia travels to Golden Valley and West Ranch is home for a game against Canyon. West Ranch and Hart are tied for first place in the league standings with 5-1 records.
In high school ice hockey, Saugus remained undefeated with a 5-2 win over West Valley in the Ice Station Valencia league.
In other games, Valencia won its first game of the season, 13-1, over Burbank. Hart lost to the Northerners, 9-6, and Canyon lost to Bakersfield, 8-2.
In college softball, a pair of Santa Clarita Valley products were selected as players of the week in their conferences.
Valencia High graduate Madison Shipman, a sophomore at the University of Tennessee, was the SEC player of the week.
Canyon High grad Nicole Johnson, playing for Cal State Fullerton, was the Big West Conference player of the week.
In the NHL playoffs, the Kings took away home-ice advantage and beat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-2, in the first game of the Western Conference playoffs.
Dustin Penner broke a 2-2 tie scoring in the third period. Dustin Brown added an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.
Game 2 of the playoff series between the Kings and the Canucks is Friday in Vancouver.
The Dodgers continued their hot start to the season with a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Andre Ethier had another big game, driving in the go-ahead run with a single in the sixth inning.
The Dodgers and Pirates play again tonight at Dodger Stadium. It will be Chris Capuano for the Dodgers against Jeff Karstens for the Pirates. First pitch is at 7:10.
