Valencia’s Carly Mortensen and West Ranch’s Bailey Foster shined in the San Fernando Valley all-star classic that ended in a 3-3 tie at Birmingham High School.
Mortensen, pitching for the East All Stars, struck out all six batters she faced in two innings and earned the defensive player of the game award.
Foster pitched two shut-out innings for the East All Stars and struck out four.
Hart’s Tracy Chandless won the home run derby before the game and hit a solo home run in the first inning.
West Ranch’s Janelle Lindvall knocked in the first run of the game for the East All Stars with a sacrifice fly. The East took a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single that scored Lindvall.
The West All Stars scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game and send it into extra innings. The game remained tied until the ninth inning.
In the NBA playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder will look to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals tonight against the Miami Heat.
The Thunder won Game 1, 105-94, rallying in the second half and erasing a 13-point deficit.
Tipoff for Game 2 in Oklahoma City is set for 6 tonight.
In baseball, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants pitched the first perfect game in franchise history against the Houston Astros.
It was the 22nd perfect game in Major League Baseball history and the second this season. Cain struck out a career-high 14 batters and shut out the Astros, 10-0.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, wasted another brilliant pitching performance from Nathan Eovaldi and lost to the Angels, 2-1.
Eovaldi gave up one run on seven hits in six innings and lowered his ERA to 1.82. But Erick Aybar hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Angels a 2-1 win.
The Angels took the Freeway Series, 2-1. Next up for the Dodgers are the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.
