The city of Santa Clarita Transit celebrated the 11th annual National Dump the Pump Day on June 16, 2016, along with more than 150 other transit agencies across the country.
As in years past, staff encouraged residents to explore public transportation by raffling off local prizes such as movie and theme park passes for those who pledge to ride. New this year was the “transit night out” which further encourages ridership by combining two movie passes, a gift card to a local restaurant and two Santa Clarita Transit day passes along with optional trip planning services by city staff.
Residents were able to pledge on SantaClaritaTransit.com as well as via Instagram and Twitter by posting a selfie onboard public transit and using the hashtag DumpthePumpSCT.
Leading up to Dump the Pump, city transit staff promoted the event via social media, as well as live radio interviews and webcasts. Outreach also included a booth at the city-sponsored block party known as Senses on Main which took place on the same day as Dump the Pump. The Santa Clarita Transit booth was seen by nearly 1,500 attendees, many of whom stopped to ask questions, pick up schedules, or discuss their experiences traveling to and from work via Santa Clarita Transit’s multiple Commuter Express routes.
By leveraging various outreach methods, most notably the event booth, staff was able to communicate the Dump the Pump message to a greater proportion of non and infrequent transit riders than in previous years. Many were unaware of the strides made in the transit technology world, and were impressed by the city’s robust Transit Information Network and the ease at which they can plan a trip using a smartphone.
While National Dump the Pump Day may come just once a year, Santa Clarita Transit staff carries its message year round.

Fine if there’s enough room at the park & ride lots to make riding public transit a reasonable option. Try finding a parking space after 6 AM at the Newhall/Sierra lot, it’s close to impossible.
