Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health alerted Saugus High School Tuesday that at least one student was diagnosed with Pertussis, the disease more commonly known as whooping cough. Parents were later notified via email.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that spreads when a person coughs or sneezes. People diagnosed with the disease can have violent coughing attacks that can last several seconds. While the best way to prevent Pertussis is still vaccination, the disease can be treated with antibiotics.
The high school is already taking measures to prevent the disease from spreading by having students who are experiencing symptoms such as coughing, not attend school until they see a doctor for treatment.
