[KHTS] The Saugus Union School District Board of Trustees have elected a new president and clerk for 2016.
Judy Egan Umeck was elected to position of president once more by the Saugus Union School District, or SUSD, Board of Trustees for 2016.
Umeck has previously served as president of the board four times in the past, in 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2009, according to the district’s website.
The Board of Trustees elected Umeck on Tuesday in its general meeting during the public session, said Lee Morrell, public information officer of SUSD.
“The way it generally works is a rotation,” Morrell said. “So who ever was the clerk generally becomes president.”
Dr. David Powell will be stepping up into Umeck’s shoes as the clerk of the Board of Trustees for 2016 and will most likely be president of the board come 2017, said Morrell.
“I think both will do a wonderful job,” Morrell added. “The board is fantastic for (the district’s) education needs.”
Umeck is also a liaison to the Special Education Local Planning Agency and is active in the Santa Clarita Valley School Trustees Association.
Umeck has also completed the California School Boards Association Masters in Governance Program and has been serving on the SUSD Board of Trustees since 1996.
Powell was appointed to the Board of Trustees in July 2014.
Powell formerly served as president and member of the West Creek Academy and Bouquet Canyon Elementary and is a professor of public policy and has received a Ph.D. in Political Science from Miami University, according to SUSD’s website.
About SUSD
SUSD oversees 15 schools and over 10,000 students from the Saugus area.
Thirteen of the schools have been recognized by the state as California Distinguished Schools, many of them being recognized more than once. Five of the schools have even been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
SUSD is active in parent participation, setting up school site councils and PTAs for the schools in the district.
Representatives from these councils have formed the Parent Advisory Committee to share information and concerns with Joan Lucid, the district’s superintendent.
