Apr 11, 2017: Medea at CalArts

Apr 11, 2017 08:00 pm

CalArts School of Theater Presents: salon MEDEA miasma

“When what I love kills me and I love what kills me, I must kill what I love, to exist.”

MEDEA is the laboratory of love and survival, where things are what they are, with too much body and too little materiality suspended on an impossible and inevitable crown molding between concentric circles of being and becoming. Who is this shapeshifting third actor in the triptych and are you a red herring? Salon Medea Miasma was what called our practice, and MEDEA was the name of our source material and our work. Then, this end-of-the-world feeling, as it magnetized me in between the ocean and our childhood homes, turned me inside out into neither I, nor not I, but not nothing, either… To do Medea is to be Medea is to see Medea, to stage our own birth, wedding and funeral under the constellation of Medea, and, to experience past, present and future at once.

Apr 12, 2017: New Heights: I’m Making a Movie, But Will Anyone Watch It? at The Centre

Apr 12, 2017 07:00 pm

In this New Heights workshop about marketing tips for Indie Filmmakers, digital market expert, Sheri Candler, will walk filmmakers through the important process of audience identification with emphasis on where to find an audience (both online and offline) and the key tools available to filmmakers to capture their audience’s attention and compel that audience to watch their film. Key focus areas of this workshop include: developing a targeted marketing plan and finding your “niche,” identifying the emotional and psychological drivers in your story that will help pinpoint your core audience, and identifying key marketing needs to attract them to your story. As a filmmaker, you will also learn about discerning the difference between a Mass, Niche and Core audience and how to use research tools to give you a better understanding of the size and motivations of your core audience. Sheri will discuss which promotional tactics work best and how to effectively utilize social media, advertising, publicity and crowdsourcing. She’ll delve into budgeting your marketing needs, the value of email databases, preparing for marketing while in production, and more.

Sheri Candler is a digital marketing strategist and social media practitioner. She has worked with The Film Collaborative, a Los Angeles based non-profit film distribution and filmmaker education organization, consulting with filmmakers on the marketing strategies for their films. Her articles on social media marketing for independent films have appeared in industry publications such as Indiewire, MovieMaker Magazine and Sundance Artists Services and she has spoken at industry events for the American Film Market, Federation of European Film Directors Annual Meeting and the Directors Guild of America. She co-authored the books Selling Your Film Without Selling Your Soul in collaboration with The Film Collaborative and Jon Reiss, and a second edition, Selling Your Film Outside the U.S., focused on the changes in the film distribution landscape in Europe. She is now the Social Media Editor for KCETLink Media Group in Los Angeles where she uses social media platforms and analytic tools to help promote programming, collaborate with producers and editors to create social media content, contribute to reaching fundraising and business goals, and expand the reach of the media group into local communities.

Apr 12, 2017: Stars and Stripes Imagined – Art Exhibit Reception at Santa Clarita City Hall

Apr 12, 2017 07:00 pm

Please join the Santa Clarita City Council, City of Santa Clarita’s Arts Commission, and the ARts and Events Division for light appetizers, entertainment and a chance to mingle with the artists featured in the “Stars and Stripes Imagined” exhibit.

The American Flag, a symbol of American freedom, has been the source of inspiration to many artists throughout the last century – often using its iconic image to form political commentary about the issues facing the nation. Artists have used it to both honor their country and tear it down. Works in this exhibition honor the symbol, while others re-interpret the symbol or use it to make a statement.
