1891 - Actor Buck Jones, a Placerita and Vasquez "regular," born in Indiana [story]

fataltcA 23-year-old Valencia man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run collision in Orange County early Thursday morning.

Travis Marton was believed to have been killed on a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach sometime before 2:56 a.m. on New Year’s Day, according to Sgt. Rachel Johnson.

“A passerby motorist said he thought that there was a dead person in the roadway,” she said.

Officials received a report shortly before 3 a.m. of a man reportedly lying in the road, she said, in a southbound lane.

The collision reportedly took place on a stretch of PCH known as East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive, Johnson said.

When NBPD officers responded, they found Marton, who was declared dead at the scene.

Marton was found near the intersection, and officers believe he was trying to cross the road when he was struck and killed.

Officers immediately put out an alert to surrounding law enforcement agencies looking for a vehicle that might have sustained collision damage.

Laguna Beach Police Department officers found Ronald Aviles, 56, of San Clemente, a short time later driving a white minivan that appeared to have been in a collision, Johnson said.

Aviles was questioned and then arrested for a felony hit and run, Johnson said, noting additional charges might be added later because the investigation was only 12 hours old and ongoing.

Aviles is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He’s expected to be arraigned in an Orange County courthouse within the next few days.

More than likely this guy will only get 3 years if he pleads out. That’s the typical sentence.
