A 51-year-old Santa Clarita Valley man apparently committed suicide in Newhall Monday morning, according to SCV Sheriff’s Station officials.
“About 8:10 this morning we received a call for a rescue response, that an individual had found an adult male lying on the ground of a church parking lot,” said Shirley Miller, the station’s public information officer.
The church was the Church of the Nazarene on The Old Road, near Calgrove Boulevard.
“Deputies responded, and the person was apparently dead due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Miller said.
“Homicide detectives were notified and they did recover the gun at the scene. But no foul play is suspected.”
Miller said Homicide is contacted in such cases as a matter of course, but that detectives are not investigating further.
She said the dead man’s next of kin had been notified, but that she could not yet reveal his identity. She confirmed his age as 51. However, Lt. Dietz from the office of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner – Coroner said no next of kin was listed for the man as of 7 p.m. Monday.
