September is National Preparedness Month. The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is working together with the County of Los Angeles Office of Emergency Management in addition to the Los Angeles Community and Senior Services, to host an annual Emergency Preparedness Workshop. The purpose of this event is to educate and empower the community to prepare for and respond to both man-made and natural emergencies.

The goal of the National Preparedness Month is to encourage individuals and families to establish a plan for future emergencies and disasters. Planning tips include, developing a strategy for how to contact one another when a disaster strikes and the importance of building an emergency kit in advance to hold food, water, and supplies to last for 72 hours.

With this year’s expected El Nino different community partners at the event will educate individuals on what to expect and how to prepare for these projected significant and disruptive storms this winter. El Nino is expected to bring the potential for more frequent and dynamically stronger storm systems which will likely increase the amount of lower-atmospheric moisture. This will result in an increased risk of precipitation-related hazards this winter in California, including flooding and landslides due to the impact this year’s dry and hot weather had on California’s landscape.
