1928 - Little dam victim, thought unidentified & buried in SCV, actually ID'd & buried in Chatsworth [story]

At the request of a local resident, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is expected Tuesday to ban tractor-trailers and other large trucks from the stretch of Sand Canyon Road that runs from the 14 Freeway on the south to Sierra Highway on the north.

Truckers tend to use the curvy road as a shortcut to Sierra, and the neighbors aren’t amused.

The restrictions would apply to vehicles with three or more axles, or gross tonnage in excess of 9,000 pounds.

Part of the roadway is in the unincorporated county and part is in the city of Santa Clarita, which is expected to make the same move.

“The purpose of the recommended action is to improve traffic safety and enhance traffic flow,” Public Works Director Gail Farber said in a report to the board. “The request for this weight limit restriction was generated by a resident of the unincorporated Canyon Country area who expressed her concern to Mayor Michael D. Antonovich that trucks using Sand Canyon Road as a bypass from the 14 Freeway to Sierra Highway can create and unsafe condition for motorists due to the roadway’s narrow and winding characteristic.”

The supervisors previously instructed Public Works to come up with alternatives, and the proposed weight and size limit is the result of talks with the city of Santa Clarita, the CHP and the Sheriff’s Department, according to Farber.

Exceptions would include government vehicles and motion picture vehicles involved in film production “in areas that are accessible only from that portion of Sand Canyon.”

“We have consulted with the city of Santa Clarita,” Farber states, “since a portion of this route is within their jurisdiction. We have received their support for the restriction, and they are also adopting the same weight limit restriction for their segment.”

The county’s action is contingent on the city adopting the same restriction, Farber states.

Steven Craig what’s happening in Newhall?

The big rigs have been going up that route because there is a weigh station just after via princessa on the fwy before you get to Sand Canyon exit, so they jump off the freeway at Sierra Highway go up Sierra hwy and through sand canyon and back on the freeway on ramp by the Denny’s on sand canyon. There is a nazi cop that sits on Soledad in front of canyon country park and waits to bust the truckers going around the weigh station on the fwy.

  5. Andrew Sarvis WTF?

  6. Yes yes I have been on he road with these monster trucks its scary as HELP! They tend to go either to fast or someone is trying to get around them and the road is way to curvy to see whats coming. There are several roads they should not use Sierra Hwy being one of them unless they have a delivery down there. They especially take it to by pass the 14 because I have seen them get on Sierra Hwy way down in Acton at Crown Valley Road.

  7. Rich are my ass! Only if you are one the Right side of the freeway!…the Nazi cop is there because the truckers are avoiding the stop. Ever wonder why? The cops are not our enemy , stop playing to the Mob! The trucks are a problem.

  8. I didn’t even know it was possible for trucks to go on that narrow windy 2 lane stretch

  9. Steven Craig, nope. Not a rich area, it’s the stretch of Sand Canyon between the 14 & Sierra Hwy, not the ritzy area east of the 14. :)

Total BS. What about the excessive road taxes they have to pay They should be allowed where ever they want to go.

  14. Alan Duvo Alan Duvo says:

You people all bit*ch & cry about the trucks but I’m sure you enjoy your groceries, clothes on your back, your beer and many other things that ALL get transported from those “scary monster trucks”
GTFO HERE!!! Find something else to cry about!!!
Signed: a Teamster that runs s route & brings Liquor & wine to Santa Clarita 4X a week!! Oh & btw: I live here too!!✌️

  15. Because it’s close to the college and antonovich owns property of there . So I would bet there is some other motivation behind it.

  16. It’s all these NFTA trucks with Mexican drivers hauling hazmat with out endorsements and some with just Class C Licenses. These truck get off at Valencia Blvd to Mc Bean to Newhall Ranch and around the Castaic Scales to north bound five.

  17. America stops with out trucks. But legal trucks obey laws. The laws are for safety. I never minded the scales. You don’t have to worry if you maintain you license endorsements permits and legal weight.

  18. “It’s scary as help!” explains it

  19. why thats the only way to bypass the chp..now u know

  20. I lol @ how people label trucks as “scary monsters”, trucks aren’t as scary as the deathwish people IN CARS who tailgate, cut off, flip off & unsafely-illegally pass trucks simply because the driver of the car is simply impatient. Granted not all truck drivers are perfect, but do everyone a favor and be patient and give them the room and extra time they need..

    • Ed Halterman Ed Halterman says:

Besides, there’s a much easier and not as curvy way to get around that “scale” which opens up when they feel like it and I’ve yet to see them actually “weigh” a truck there. Quit grouping the actions of a few idiots into the generalizations of all, the ignorance about trucks on here is amazing.

This matter is about the trucks! Not sure how race has anything to do with this and not all truck drivers are Mexican.!

  22. Glad to see that they are doing this I drive Sand Canyon daily and those darn truck are always driving too fast and almost pushing people off the road.

  23. Randy Geniec Randy Geniec says:

Kind of ridiculous. Ban all or ban none. Movie and government trucks exempt? Socialism is for the people- not the socialist.
If they make the rule then it should apply to themselves as well.

  25. Let the truckers weigh in as required. This is good news.

  26. James Deegan James Deegan says:

It’s about mother funkin time!!!! They don’t fit without coming over the double yellow. Been saying it for years!!!!!

  27. It’s the bicyclists on that stretch that scare me. They have every right to be there, but they’re inches away from disaster.

  28. Annette Uthe says:

I hope there’s a school bus exemption to that restriction.

  29. Regardless of ” rich or poor” area. Putting a value of life in dollars is sad. That old road was never built to accommodate big truck. It’s a country road that both rich and poor use, and truckers use to avoid the scales.

  30. Don’t be mad folks!! I love trucks and truck drivers..sand canyon road between 14 and sierra highway is too curvy and narrow for tractor trailers..I live there..had nothing to do with who owns what..it is narrow..thank you..

  31. Tessa Lucero says:

It’s narrow and curvy and that blind curve at the crest of the hill is difficult to maneuver. In addition, some of those trucks are avoiding the brake checks at the weigh station on the 14. Do you want a tractor-trailer with brakes that won’t pass inspection coming down either side of that road and possibly losing control? An incident on a similar road (Angeles Crest and Foothill Blvd) involving a big rig coming down a curvy mountain road killed people and finally got the trucks banned from that road. Most truckers are safe drivers but the ones who aren’t could cause a terrible accident on that stretch of Sand Canyon.

  32. Carlos G. Castillo says:

    This so absurd!
People, Sand Canyon Rd. was here long before most of you were born. Trucks have been going up and down this road for years without incident. We, since I am a truck driver myself, have been using this route to get from Saugus to East Canyon Country for deliveries. It is not,a preferred detour for the truck scales, as some of you keep bringing up.
It takes 5-10 minutes to get from Sierra Hwy to Soledad Canyon Rd. If trucks are restricted from this road, it will take us on a 30 minute detour. Yes. Do you know that Soledad Canyon Road is a no-truck zone from Sierra Hwy to Shadow Pines? So, if we are in the northern part of Saugus, we would have to travel all the way down to Golden Valley Rd. to the 14, burning more fuel, creating pollution, and increasing the risk of an accident by driving in heavy traffic with more commuters.
This portion of Sand Canyon Rd. is home to a nnewer housing community, and is in the spotlight to a new community development zone.
I want to know how 1 resident has so much influence to ban trucks on this road. Probably got stuck behind a slow truck and made her late to her nail appointment.
There has not been an increase in truck traffic on these roads in years. It has actually dwindled down. 20 years ago, this was the route used by trucks hauling material from sand and gravel quarries in Soledad Canyon to the mega developments in town back before Golden Valley and Via Princessa were alternate routes. Commuters are using these canyon roads now as alternates to the 14.
Limiting truck routes will NOT improve traffic flow in Santa Clarita.
