In what proved to be another exciting year for The Master’s College Athletic Department, the student-athletes of TMC produced some of the most memorable moments in school history.

The Master’s College Sports Information staff recently gathered together and assembled the quintessential list of the top 10 moments in Mustang Athletics for 2014. What follows is No. 1-4.

1.) Farris, Mahowa Headline Soccer Honors

After leading their respective squads to successful campaigns, on the field in the fall, senior Katie Farris and freshman Humphrey Mahowa were named NAIA All-Americans and GSAC Players of the Year, the first time in school history that Mustangs have earned the conference’s top honors in the same season.

Farris, an All-America second-team choice, posted 41 points, the second-highest, single-season total in program history while Mahowa, an All-America honorable mention selection, led the GSAC in scoring with 29 points.  Joining Farris on the All-American squad were fellow seniors Natasha Coyle and Jordan Benson.

Men’s soccer coach Jim Rickard was named the NAIA West Region Coach of the Year after mentoring the Mustangs to an 11-9-1 record and a berth in the GSAC Tournament championship match.

2.) Matthew Crichton Ends Incredible Four-Year Career With TMC’s Cross Country and Track Programs

In May, Matthew Crichton graduated from The Master’s College as one of the most accomplished athletes to compete for the college’s cross country and track program.

In his time at TMC, Crichton made four consecutive appearances at both the cross country and track NAIA national championships–a feat never before accomplished by a Mustang.

Crichton’s cross county career is highlighted by clocking a time of 25 minutes and 39.48 seconds at the 2013 Mustang Challenge men’s 8k collegiate race.

In track, Crichton notched impressive times in the following events: 1:56.38 in the 800m at the 2014 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, 3:54.25 in the 1500m at the 2014 Westmont Classic, and 9:20.19 in the men’s steeple-chase at the 2013 Stanford Invitational. Notably, in the distance medley relay at the 2011 Rossi Relays, Crichton competed alongside TMC track alumni Anthony Pizzo, Nathan Seyler, and Paul Jesson, posting a time of 10:49.92.

3.) Women’s Basketball “Marshalled” To Outstanding Season

Senior Jacquelyn Marshall was named TMC’s 2013-14 Women’s Athlete of the Year and a first-team, NAIA All-American after leading the Lady Mustangs to a 24-9 record, a second-place finish in the GSAC, and a second consecutive berth in the NAIA  National Tournament.

Marshall, a repeat All-American (second-team in 2012-13) and All-GSAC selection, made her second and final season in the Mustang frontcourt a memorable one, leading the team in scoring and rebounding, smashing a 27-year old, single-season mark with 343 caroms.  Fellow senior Zoe Scott joined Marshall on the All-American squad as an honorable mention choice after capping a stellar, four-year career by shooting her way to the program’s record for three-pointers and becoming the 12th player in school history to break the 1000-point plateau.

4.) Karkenny’s Versatility Leads Mustang Baseball

Displaying the skills that have made him one of the most decorated players in program history, outfielder/pitcher Steve Karkenny earned All-American honors for the second year in a row and was named the college’s 2013-14 Men’s Athlete of the Year.

The junior, who earned multiple postseason honors, starred at the plate, leading the club in 10 offensive categories, and on the mound where he sparkled as the closer, earning a rare All-GSAC double as an outfielder and pitcher.

He led the Mustangs to a 37-18 record, a second-place finish in the GSAC, season-long Top 25 rankings (a No. 20 postseason spot), and a berth in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
