Kicking off the tournament at 8:00 AM, the 19th-ranked Lady Mustangs took to the court to face the seventh-ranked Midland University Warriors.
After taking the first set in dramatic fashion with a 26-24 victory, the Lady Mustangs faced an uphill battle as Midland came out swinging in the following sets. After dropping the next three frames (23-25, 20-25, 18-25), TMC’s overall record fell to 0-2.
“We fought for momentum the whole game, but they (Midland) put together a few good runs at the end and had good ball control to take the 2nd game 25-23,” commented head coach Allan Vince. “Game three turned into a dogfight where we were doing some really good things and playing well and gelling as a team. Game four produced a good sprint by them, and even though we fought or each point, they got the match.”
Key players for the Lady Mustangs in the day’s first match were Britney Jones (Northridge, CA) who finished with a .385 hitting percentage, Emily Clark (Lake Forest, CA) who had a great defensive game by producing 16 digs, and Jasmine Demare (Dearborn, MI) who helped balance the defense with 11 digs of her own.

The Lady Mustangs shrugged-off their morning performance by coming out hot in a 4:00 PM match against receiving-votes Bellevue University. At the end of three quick sets, the Lady Mustangs notched its first win of the season by topping the Bruins 3-0.
“We came with our “A” game,” commented Coach Vince. “We played very well as a team. Our girls created great point scoring opportunities and did some real damage from the service line.”
Emily Clark, who this time shined on offense, finished the match with three aces. Alison Child (Shingle Springs, CA) hit .615 and claimed eight kills, while Morgan Koch (Auburn, CA) posted eight more kills and finished the night with a .235 hitting percentage. Sydney Hamilton (Santa Clarita, CA) produced a spectacular defensive effort by posting 13 digs.
Looking ahead, the Lady Mustangs will look to improve on their 1-2 record Friday morning when they face 13th-ranked Dordt College at 8:00 AM, followed by a 4:00 PM match against receiving-votes Concordia University of Oregon.
