Rebounding from Saturday’s shocking 71-64 loss to the unranked Arizona Christian Firestorm, The Master’s College women’s basketball team took down Biola University (11-8, 8-7 GSAC) 73-42 Tuesday night at Bross Court.
With the win, the 18th-ranked Lady Mustangs’ 2014-15 record improves to 20-8 and 10-5 in GSAC play. TMC is currently tied for third-place in the GSAC standings with No. 15 Westmont (23-5, 10-5 GSAC).
Commenting on the victory, sixth-year Lady Mustang basketball head coach Dan Waldeck said, “After a tough loss the other night, I thought we responded with great resolve, will, and togetherness. We played with solid team defense and had consistent concentration. It was a very needed win for us. I’m proud of our team.”
The win also improves Waldeck’s overall career record to 130-82.
The team’s “togetherness” that Waldeck mentioned in his post-game interview was evident from start to finish, as the Lady Mustangs never let the Eagles take the lead. Tuesday’s game only displayed a single tie score (2-2) early on at the 17:14 mark.
TMC’s largest lead of the night (31 points) came with only 27 seconds left to play as the Mustangs closed the evening with the 73-42 victory.
Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) led all scorers with 16 points, while Megan Lindsley (Vancouver, WA) followed by scoring 12 more. Millie Rivera (Allen, TX) complemented TMC’s scoring efforts by posting 11 points. Nicole Nitake (Torrance, CA) was the fourth Lady Mustang to score in double digits by posting 10 points.
As a team, TMC finished the night by 24-48 (50%) from the field, 6-15 (40%) from behind the arc, and 19-23 (83%) from the charity stripe.
Notably, Tuesday’s win assures TMC that they will host next Wednesday’s opening-round game of the GSAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. Opponents for the eight-team tournament will be determined after Saturday night’s games.
Now, the Lady Mustangs will close out the regular-season Saturday night when they host Hope International (16-13, 7-8 GSAC) at 5:30 p.m.
