The Master’s University men’s swim team led the way in the pool as both the men’s and women’s team competed in the Triple Distance Individual hosted by Concordia University Irvine at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine Saturday afternoon Jan. 11.

The men’s team ended the meet with a dominating 39.5 point lead to claim a first place finish, while the women’s team finished in third.

Seniors Tyler LeDet and David Kugler both won three events. LeDet finished first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:44.88), 500 yard freestyle (4:49.46) and 1,000 yard freestyle (9:56.64), while Kugler finished first in the 100 yard individual medley (54.14), 200 yard individual medley (1:56.77) and 400 yard individual medley (4:11.26).

Sophomore Dylan Crane won two events, finishing first in the 50 yard freestyle (21.79) and 100 yard freestyle (47.51).

Senior Nilton Dos Santos De Oliveira finished first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:46.60), while freshman Charley Sears won in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:11.36).

For TMU Head Coach Curren Bates, the men’s first place finish is thanks to the hard work they have put in since returning from the winter break.

“We’re in a really hard training season right now,” Bates said. “Everybody’s been training really hard so it was really good to kind of come out, win this meet and see everybody swim fast, even though they’re all tired.”

On the women’s side, freshman Katherine Dyer continues to impress, as she won three events. She claimed first in the 100 yard individual medley (1:00.41), 200 yard individual medley (2:10.63) and 400 yard individual medley (4:32.82).

Junior Kylee Sears also had an impressive showing after dealing with sickness leading up to the meet. She finished second in the 50 yard freestyle (25.31), 100 yard freestyle (52.17) and 200 yard freestyle (1:56.04).

“She’s coming back from a pretty bad sickness, so it was good to kind of see her back and for a little bit.” Bates said about Sears.

Bates is proud of how both teams have competed, as the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area have affected both teams in and out of the pool.

“We had a bunch of practices get canceled because of the fires and everything like that.” Bates said. “It’s a crazy week and stressful for a lot of people and so it’s good that everyone is able to shake that off and just swim for the glory of the Lord this weekend and compete through all that.”

The next scheduled meet for both the men’s and women’s teams is the Concordia, Fresno Pacific, TMU Tri-Meet on Jan. 18 at the Castaic Aquatic Center at 12 p.m.
