During last season’s impressive, almost immaculate first half, the Mustangs’ few slip-ups carried a common theme: Master’s would surrender an early goal and scramble to catch up.
That wasn’t the case Friday in an NAIA Top 25 matchup, as the No. 17 Mustangs drew first blood against No. 12 Keiser University in Palm Beach, Fla., only to watch the Seahawks run off three straight goals in what became a 4-2 TMU loss.
The Mustangs are now 1-2 on a four-game swing through Florida, with both losses coming against teams ranked in the top 15.
After opening the season with a three-goal defeat against No. 6 Southeastern University, Master’s bounced back with a smothering win over Warner University.
It hoped for a similar result this time as it traveled to play St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens on Saturday. The game concluded a trip the Mustangs knew would be challenging.
But regardless of the outcome, the team didn’t expect the slew of games in an eight-day span to set the trajectory for the season.
Coach Curtis Lewis said two of his goals for the season were a return to the NAIA tournament and 60 collective goals – or two more than the program’s single-season record and four more than the team tallied a year ago.
Kellian Ahearn scored the Mustangs’ second goal of 2018 in the fourth minute Friday, heading a pass from Kyndel Borman into the back of the net. Master’s held the lead for all of 13 minutes before Keiser delivered the equalizer and went on to score twice more before halftime.
Filippa Millqvist knocked in the second and third goals of the day for Keiser, which trekked to California last season and fell to the Mustangs 3-2. It was part of a 7-0 start to the year for TMU.
Lynnae George‘s goal in the 66th minute, after a lighting delay, supplied the Mustangs with hope of another win at the Seahawks’ expense. But Maxi Krug answered with a goal from the top of the 18-yard box in the 76th minute, ending any chance of a rally – but not necessarily a rebound.
The Mustangs and St. Thomas met again on Saturday.
