Call it rivalry Thursday.
Santa Clarita Christian School will host Trinity Classical Academy in a Heritage League showdown of top-ranked boys basketball “small school” powers at 7 pm at SCCS.
The game is being televised by SCVTV, with the tape-delay broadcast beginning at 9:30 pm Thursday and repeating Friday evening. It is the first broadcast of a regular season game for both schools.
The 2013-14 season saw Trinity win the CIF-SS Div. 6 championship and SCCS take the runner-up spot in CIF-SS Div. 5A.
The Trinity Knights (Div. 4A) come into the game with a 14-6 record overall and 4-0 in Heritage League play. The Knights have knocked off some much larger, higher division programs this season including a signature 73-64 win over Renaissance Academy (1AA/Open Div.), a 64-41 win over University (City Div. 1), a 44-43 win over Firebaugh (Div. 3AA) and a Foothill League foe Golden Valley .
The Knights are currently ranked No. 6 in Div. 4A. Due to their recent CIF-SS success (2013 CIF Champions, 2012 CIF Runner-Up), the Knights moved up from Div. 6 to Div. 4A, which includes perennial powerhouses Buckley, Campbell Hall and Maranatha.
Trinity is led by junior guard Ian Caddow (18.2 ppg (50%), 7.4 rpg) and senior forward Ryan Brooks (15.9 ppg (50%), 7.7 rpg, 5.2 apg). Brooks verbally committed last week to play at NAIA Westmont in Brooks verbally committed last week to play at NAIA Division 1 Westmont in Santa Barbara of the Golden State Athletic Conference. It is the first-ever basketball college commitment for Trinity in the school’s 5 years of CIF competition.
The SCCS Cardinals (Div. 5A) have a 13-2 (2-0) and are coming off a 65-38 win over Rancho Dominguez (Div. 4). They are currently ranked No. 4 in Div. 5A behind Bell-Jeff, Capistrano Valley Christian and Rancho Christian.
The Cardinals are led by 6’4″ Junior Guard #23 Bryce Wilkinson (14.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Senior Center #35 Chris Collins (11.3 ppg, 11.2 rpg).
The game will be played at Santa Clarita Christian School (27249 Luther Dr., Canyon Country, CA 91351) at 7 pm.
