LANCASTER – The University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (15-4; 5-1 Cal Pac) continued their winning ways on Thursday evening, defeating the Red Hawks of Simpson University (12-8; 4-2 Cal Pac) handily, 89-59 in intercollegiate California Pacific Conference women’s basketball action inside the Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster.
UAV came out of the gate strong, beginning the game with an 11-0 run and would not look back as they would go on to defeat Simpson by 30 points, 89-59, moving the Pioneers into a three-way tie for first place in the Cal Pac standings with UC Merced and Embry-Riddle, all sharing a 5-1 conference record.
Junior forward Tylen Price (Lancaster, CA) led all Pioneers with 21 points and also added three rebounds and three assists, senior guard Ilianna Blanc (Los Angeles, CA) finished with 16 points and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the three-point line, and senior guard Daizah Pounds (Richmond, CA) scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and also had four assists.
Senior guard Samantha Earl (Clovis, CA) dropped 13 points and added three assists and three steals, senior guard LaChae McColor (Honolulu, HI) contributed nine points and pulled down six rebounds, and sophomore forward Alexia Budd (Los Angeles, CA) chipped in with eight points, five boards and two blocks.
UAV hit 32-of-74 field goals (.432), 18-of-38 three-pointers (.474), 7-of-12 free throws (.583), and outrebounded the Red Hawks, 42-35. The Pioneers committed 11 turnovers and stole the ball 11 times. Simpson made 17-of-49 shots (.347), 5-of-20 three-pointers (.250) and 20-of-32 free throws (.625) and committed 18 turnovers and stole the ball from UAV six times.
NEXT GAME: Coached by Deon Price, the Pioneers remained at home to host No. 22-ranked UC Merced for a California Pacific Conference contest on Saturday, Jan. 19, inside the Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster.
