There are currently 16 players with ties to the Santa Clarita Valley playing professional baseball tied to Major League Baseball. Several others are playing professionally in independent leagues. What follows are those players attached to Major League baseball organizations.

Majors

James Shields (Hart) – Rays – Big Game James, or Jamie as he was known during his days at Hart, continues to be a top pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, despite a few trade rumors before the MLB trading deadline. Shields is 10-7 with a 4.02 ERA, 153 strikeouts in 161.1 innings pitched.

AAA

Trevor Bauer (Hart) – DiamondBacks – Since his brief stay with the major league club in July, Bauer is back at Triple-A Reno. His last start on August 12th was a rough one. He lasted 4.1 innings, gave up five runs (three earned) on two home runs, struck out six but walked four. In the minors this year, between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno, Trevor is 11-2 with a 2.33 ERA, 131 strikeouts in 108.1 innings. With the Diamondbacks, he was 1-2 in four starts, with a 6.06 ERA.

Danny Worth (Valencia) – Tigers – Worth is stuck on the up/down escalator within the Tigers organization. He has been up and down four times this season, most recently for just one game on August 5th. With Detroit, the second baseman was hitting .206 with no home runs, three RBI and eight runs scored.. At Triple-A Toledo, Worth is hitting .260 with five home runs, 17 RBI and 20 runs scored..

Chris Valaika (Hart) – Reds – Chris has spent the entire season with the Louisville Bats. Now playing third base, Valaika is hitting .233 with six home runs, 28 RBI and 24 runs scored.

Dana Eveland (COC) – Orioles – Eveland has been on a similar escalator as Worth in 2012, splitting time between the Orioles and Triple-A Norfolk Tides, Currently he is with the Tides, where he is 4-4 with a 2.81 ERA as a starter. With the Orioles he has been used primarily out of the bullpen. With the big club Eveland is 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA

AA

Casey Mulligan (Valencia) – Cardinals – Mulligan is still listed on the roster of the Cardinals Double-A affiliate Springfield Cardinals in the Texas League but is on the Restricted List. He has not seen any action all season.

Mike Montgomery (Hart) – Royals – After spending much of this season and all of last year with the Royals Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, Montgomery was demoted to the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals on July 11th. Between the two teams in 2012, Montgomery is 5-9 with a 5.70 ERA, 96 strikeouts in 132.2 innings pitched.. Despite going down to Double-A, the left-hander is still listed as the No. 3 prospect in the Kansas City Royals organization.

High-A

A

Virgil Hill (Valencia) – Cardinals – Hill has been with the Quad Cities River Bandits since mid-2011. After hitting .204 with four home runs, 22 RBI and 28 runs scored through June 30, the speedy outfielder was placed on the 7-day disabled list.

Short-A

Charlie Gillies (West Ranch/COC/The Master’s) – Tigers – After signing a week after being drafted in the 10th round, Gillies was assigned to the Connecticut Tigers of the Class A Short-Season New York Penn League. He has pitched well in his 10 starts but has yet to get a win. Gillies is 0-3 with a 3.29 ERA, 39 strikeouts in 38.1 innings.

Trevor Brown (Hart) – Giants – Brown was assigned to the Class A Short-Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League after being drafted this past June. Listed as one of four catchers on the team, Brown is hitting .190 with no home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored.

Chipper Smith (Golden Valley) – Marlins – Received a promotion to the Class A Short-Season Jamestown Jammers of the New York Penn League from Rookie ball. Since being drafted by the Marlins in June out of Cumberland University, Smith is a combined 1-0 with the two teams and a 0.00 ERA. In 18.1 innings pitched, he has struck out 14, walked two, and opponents are hitting just .129 against him.

Rookie

Zach Vincej (Saugus) – Reds – Since signing with the Reds in July after being drafted in June, Vincej has been tearing up the Pioneer League for the Billings Mustangs. He is hitting .419 with one home run, 12 RBI and 15 runs in 18 games.

Christian Lopes (Attended Valencia) – Blue Jays – Drafted out of Edison High School after spending his first two years at Valencia, Lopes is with the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Rookie Level Appalachian League. Listed as the organization’s No. 20 top prospect, Lopes is hitting .273 with three home runs, 23 RBI and 30 runs scored.

Timmy Lopes (Attended Valencia) – Mariners – It has been a good summer in Arizona for the younger brother of Christian. After being taken in the 6th round by the Mariners this past June out of Edison High School, Lopes was assigned to the Rookie Level Arizona League where he is hitting .316 with no home runs, 26 RBI and 35 runs scored.

Cory Jones (COC) – Cardinals – After being drafted in the 5th round by the Cardinals this past June, the former College of the Canyons pitcher has had a rough summer. He was initially assigned to Rookie affiliate Johnson City before being sent to the Cardinals Gulf Coast League team in Florida. In his last start for Johnson City on July 22nd, Jones gave up eight earned runs in the first inning on seven hits and a walk. Though his status does show active, the 6-5 right-hander has not pitched in a game since that last start.

Casey McCarthy (Hart) – Marlins – McCarthy has been used straight out of the bullpen for the Marlins’ Rookie level team in the Gulf Coast League. In 14 appearances, the 6-4 right-hander is 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA, 22 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .176 against him.
