College of the Canyons was victorious for the second time in as many games, as the Cougars men’s basketball team defeated visiting L.A. Southwest College 65-52 on Tuesday night in the Cougar Cage.
The victory gives Canyons (7-10) back-to-back wins for the second time this season with just one non-conference contest remaining on the schedule.
The Cougars had four players score in double digits with sophomore Robert Moss leading the way on a 7-of-11 shooting night that resulted in a team-high 17 points. Moss also added seven rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals to cap his stat line.
Sophomore Jacob Lilley finished the night with 14 points and three assists, while Michael Kalu added 13 points in the winning effort.
COC freshman Anthony Simone also had a strong outing with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Those numbers allowed the Cougars to pull away in the second half, after taking a 36-31 lead into halftime
Canyons also outrebounded L.A. Southwest by a 35-25 margin and won the turnover battle by committing three fewer giveaways than their opponent. COC shot a combined 41 percent from the field.
L.A. Southwest (6-10) recorded a 38.5 percent field goal percentage, with Austin Toomalatai leading all scorers with 21 points. However, no other played scored more than six points. LASW has now dropped four straight games.
Tuesday’s win comes after the Cougars picked up a 91-85 road win over Ventura College on Saturday night. The win over VC snapped a three-game skid for Canyons.
Here’s the box score.
Now COC head coach Howard Fisher and the Cougars will look to build on their momentum heading into Western State Conference play on Jan. 20.
Prior to that, Canyons will host L.A. Harbor College (10-7) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13.
