[KHTS] – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a new crosswalk and new crossing guard for Pico Canyon Elementary School on Tuesday.

Pico Canyon and the Newhall School District expressed their concerns to Supervisor Michael Antonovich’s office, because students, parents and school staff were crossing Chase Avenue to access an existing pedestrian bridge that connects to the rear entrance of the school.

The board approved a mid-block crosswalk, with flashing lighted beacons, said Pico Canyon Principal Laura Banda, so that students could cross Chase Ave. between Akins Court and Huston Street, where there is no established intersection.

A crossing guard was also approved for the intersection of Stevenson Ranch Parkway and Chase Ave.

The community has been involved in getting the crosswalk approved, and  Banda expected them to be very grateful for the improvements, she said.

“Pico Canyon is grateful for Supervisor Antonovich’s support,” she said, “to provide a safer route for our students to come to and from school.”

The improvements are scheduled to be completed by Aug. 31, before the school year starts.
