[KHTS] – Fitness Compound, on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country, closed on Wednesday after three years in business.

fitness-compound-canyon-country-unexpectedly-closes-transfersThe gym’s telephone number, 661-347-1111, was still active as of Monday at 10:30 a.m., and customers who call will hear a recorded apology and information for those who still have active memberships with the gym.

“It is with great regret that we are forced to close our doors, effective immediately,” the recording said. “We have arranged for all of our memberships to be honored at the Santa Clarita Athletic Club.”

One customer of Fitness Compound, who had been a member since January, expressed frustration at the unexpected closure.

She chose Fitness Compound because it was close to home, and said that if she had wanted to drive across town to go to the gym, she would have joined Santa Clarita Athletic Club in Newhall in the first place.

She attended her regular boot camp class on Monday and returned on Wednesday to find Fitness Compound closed.

Previously, she had been pleased with the gym and the classes it offered.

Fitness Compound posted a message on their Facebook page, stating that the business had been blindsided by an investor and forced out of business.

fitness-compound-canyon-country-unexpectedly-closes-transfers“After three and a half years in business and massive investments in both time and capital we are forced to close our doors,” the post said. “Over the past few months we had secured additional financing to initiate needed improvements and to fund ongoing operations… We had even more improvements planned, but learned a few days ago that the investment we had secured had been terminated.”

Fitness Compound commented further in response to customers expressing disappointment on Facebook.

“The last thing in the world I wanted to do was close. It is mentally (and) physically killing me,” the comment said. “I was blindsided by an investor. Not sure why…my investor decided to shut the doors and not pay for these improvements. I live here with most of the Compound family, he lives in Philly, doesn’t care about what just happened. Wearing your shoes I would be upset as well, I would like you to see my side prior to judging my intentions. I’m very sorry this happened. Please accept my (humblest) apologies.”

A note to the same effect was posted on Fitness Compound’s front door.

An employee who answered the phone at Santa Clarita Athletic Club didn’t have any information on the closure and said that the deal with Fitness Compound had been conducted by the Club’s out-of-state owner.

He confirmed that Santa Clarita Athletic Club, which is on Wiley Canyon Road in Newhall, is accepting Fitness Compound memberships.

Fitness Compound, which had a 4.5-star rating on Yelp, opened in 2010 and provided an “innovative combination of fitness, martial arts and sports performance training,” according to their Yelp profile.

Their website, FitCompound.com, now redirects to the Santa Clarita Athletic Club website.

“We want to thank our amazing members, instructors and staff for their support over the last three years,” the recording said.

  1. Sad. I lived in Canyon Country for 6 years, and that gym location changed hands 3 times.

  2. Ya remember when it was the Athletic Club?

  3. Go check out Warrior Fitness….I love it

  4. There goes another one.. I think that’s the 3rd gym that has set up and then not very long afterwards, they’re gone.. wonder what is going to be there next.

  5. I was so close to cancelling my LA fitness membership and joining here. Something just told me not to. So glad I didn’t join.

  6. I live walking distance from it but the local review about their horrible customer service is no wonder they’re going under!!

  7. the athletic club is 12 miles from here. I feel sorry for the people who have no transportation to get over to the other gym. Hopefully they will agree to let people out of their contracts. I called the membership company and asked for a refund for unused but paid for personal training and haven’t received an answer yet. They just say it will be honored at the Athletic Club. I don’t want to go to the Athletic Club 12 miles away . . .

  8. They need to make more planet fitness in the valley

  9. Sandra Huerta how did u pay?

  10. I loved this gym! They were AWESOME! They will be missed!!! :(

  13. Iain Carson says:

So we taught a fencing class there until a few weeks ago. We were told to leave one month prior because someone bought the gym (supposedly the same guy who bought out the Santa Clarita Athletic Club and kicked out all the tenants to build a crossfit gym. This Included our fencing club who had been tenants for over 12 years there) The owner of the Athletic Club is from out of town. Either from Ohio or Philly. He was very disrespectful to us and other programs that shared the Athletic Club facility. The owner told us to move over to the fitness compound because he had a connection there…. My guess is he was the other owner of the club. The week prior to us leaving they moved a whole bunch of equipment upstairs where we fenced. So obviously something went south or this guy was trying to close out competition.

  14. I would love to have a planet fitness out here!!! They are awesome!

  25. Jennifer Rashid says:

Yes this gym has changed hands many time and it doesn’t help that the rent on the buildings there in that center are very high it’s hard to stay open like that. The investor wasn’t nice not giving them time to find another investor. But Ekata us great my son went for JKD there I believe they have a new location with many more facilities now if I could only talk my son into going back…. You will find much support take a look at their website.
