[KHTS] – Deputies and friends and family of law enforcement from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station participated in the 37th annual Memorial Torch Relay Run last weekend, to honor those peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

The relay began on Friday at the Sheriff’s Headquarters in Monterey Park and continued for 313 miles through Sunday, stopping at each mainland Sheriff’s Station for a total of 56 relay legs.

The SCV leg was 20 miles long, starting at the Jake Kuredjian memorial in Stevenson Ranch on Sunday and continuing all the way up Sierra Highway, where runners from the Lancaster Station took over.

Deputy Jonathan Wilson, zone leader for Canyon Country West, ran a total of 9.7 miles between the memorial and Whites Canyon Road, he said during an interview on the KHTS AM-1220 show “Neighborhood Watch.”

Deputy Jeremy Carr, Stevenson Ranch zone leader, ran about 4.5 miles, Wilson said.

The event was followed by a memorial ceremony on Wednesday at the department’s S.T.A.R.S. Training Academy in Whittier. Local deputies Wilson and Regina Yost, Valencia zone leader, participated in the honor guard.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, Hawthorne Police Department and California Highway Patrol joined in the ceremony, which honored the fallen, some dating back as far as the late 1800s, said Santa Clarita Deputy Josh Dubin on “Neighborhood Watch.”

Chief Charlie Beck of LAPD, Sheriff John Scott and County Supervisor Michael Antonovich spoke at the ceremony, which honored officers likeHagop “Jake” Kuredjian, who died in the line of duty in 2001 while serving a search warrant in Stevenson Ranch.

Dubin said that the Memorial Torch Run is meant to conclude National Police Week, which was proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy and established by Congress in 1962 as the week of May 15.

“It was an awesome event…” Dubin said of the run. “All the Sheriff’s Stations participated.”
