City Allows Access for Jail Owner to Make Repairs

The Old Newhall Jail, built in 1906, sits in the middle of the Newhall Library construction zone.

The owner of the historic Newhall jail building was back in court Monday and was given another month and a half to bring his property up to code.

The city of Santa Clarita filed criminal charges in August accusing Manny Santana, 60, of failing to comply with orders issued in February, March and July to fix up his property, which suffers from peeling paint, graffiti and dilapidated fencing.

The building is a little island surrounded by the city’s Newhall Library construction site.

In October, Santana produced documents from the city’s attorney instructing him, via his attorney, to keep off city property. Santana said he couldn’t make the necessary repairs without trespassing onto city property, which abuts it on three sides.

In Santa Clarita Superior Court on Monday, the city’s attorney agreed to allow Santana onto city property long enough to do the necessary work.

“Per court order, Mr. Santana must fix all city code enforcement violations by Jan. 31, 2012, and the city’s agreement will allow him to access his property to make repairs,” city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said.

The two sides are due back in court in February.

Chiquita Canyon Landfill Ceases Operations Jan. 1
Chiquita Canyon, LLC has announced that the Chiquita Canyon Landfill is closing active waste disposal operations effective Jan. 1, 2025. The last day for accepting incoming solid waste at the landfill is Tuesday, Dec. 31. While waste disposal operations will conclude, Chiquita Canyon, LLC will continue to manage the landfill, address the noxious odor incident occurring onsite and oversee closure and post-closure activities.
