[KHTS] – The Santa Clarita City Council unanimously approved the installation of stop signs at multiple intersections along the recently opened Golden Valley Road Extension on Tuesday evening.
“The recent completion of Golden Valley Road, connecting Newhall Ranch Road and Plum Canyon Road, has led to a change in traffic patterns within the neighborhood near Dorothy Street,” according to Tuesday’s agenda. “As a result, traffic volumes have increased on Dorothy Street from approximately 1,500 to over 3,000 vehicles a day. Similarly, traffic volumes have also increased on Langside Avenue.”
Area residents have submitted several complaints to the city of Santa Clarita regarding the higher traffic volumes, speeding and an overall impact to their quality of life, according to city documents.
City officials will install multi way stop controls at three intersections: Dorothy Street at Florence Lane, Langside Avenue at Dorothy Street and Langside Avenue at Ermine Street.
“The new multi way stop controls will improve traffic circulation and safety for both motorists and pedestrians,” Tuesday’s agenda continued.
The total cost for the installation of these stop controls, including labor and material, is estimated at approximately $3,000.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department maintains a strong presence on these roadways, according to city documents.
Santa Clarita staff has also deployed the “Public Awareness Radar Educational Trailer,” or PARET, to help reduce violations and educate motorists.
“Staff will continue to work with area residents to develop a plan for potential traffic calming measures on the affected streets,” according to city officials.
A neighborhood meeting was conducted on Jan. 13 to discuss possible alternatives and receive feedback. The results will be presented to the city council in March.
