The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things – “of shoes and ships and sealing wax; of cabbages and kings.”

We also need to talk about, “why is art important in Santa Clarita?”

It’s a question few residents would be able to answer. However, a Master Plan for Art in Santa Clarita is going to be developed by city officials this summer when they appoint a consultant to seek input from residents on how best to engage the community in the process of defining a place for art in Santa Clarita. Once meetings have been scheduled, the city will utilize local media, social media and email communication to inform the community about these meetings.

It is vital to create a successful master plan that is reflective of the needs of the entire community. Watch for the dates to appear at the master plan meetings in the news media.

Jaylene Armstrong is an art advocate, visual artist and instructor living in Santa Clarita.

I left Santa Clarita (Newhall) in 1998 to find fame and fortune, which like sand, can fall through your fingers as easily as holding it in your hands.

Don’t get me wrong, many great opportunities were built upon and many have fallen. I say all of that because my abode here in an old “one time factory town” has laid the foundation to turn empty downtown to art galleries. Will it fly? Time will tell.

My thoughts return to Newhall, which I lost touch with until I found this site last week, seems like they are still struggling to find a master plan for the arts. Santa Clarita was my launching pad all those many years ago for which I am grateful. Now living in this once dirty old factory town I never thought art would replace pollution. Cleveland also has awaken along with the Akron area where I display my photography and tell stories, many composed in my California days.

Now I am surprised Sanata Clarita is still searching for a master plan in the midst of talent. Hope you find your artistic place. Of course, I am just reading an op-ed and turning it into a book so the river likely runs deeper than Jaylene’s article.

Now that I have found this wonderful SCV site, I shall watch , listen and learn. Good day to all those still left around Newhall from days, er, years past.

May I also add that it would be very helpful for the city to actually fund their own Arts Council.
