Experts in aging shared the latest in research and resources to families and caregivers at the SCV Senior Center’s Caregivers Resource Day Saturday.

“People usually don’t identify them as caregivers, but they need to know where to go for resources,” said SCV Senior Center Executive Director Rochelle Dardeau.

More than 30 people registered for the event but at least 50 packed the recreation room at the Senior Center in Newhall Saturday morning.

Admission to the event was $5, but the information shared by presenters and vendors was priceless.  Several lucky attendees also won gift certificates to restaurants and grocery stores ranging from $25 to $50 during raffles throughout the day.

Presenters included lawyer Jane McNamara who spoke about preparing for legal issues associated with aging in a presentation titled “Protecting Your Assets and Your Independence.”

Senior Center Executive Director Rochelle Dardeau gave a presentation titled “Coping with Caregiving.”

“It’s a 24 hour job that we’re usually not prepared for,” she said.

Dr. Helena Chang Chui, U.S.C. Alzheimer Disease Research Center Director, gave an informative speech about the latest in Alzheimer research, detection and treatment.

“There’s going to be a wave of people diagnosed with Alzheimer disease because of the wave of baby boomers.  It’s information that we all need to have,” said Dardaeu.

The SCV Senior Center employs care managers within its supportive services department who provide resources and direct services to caregivers and families throughout the year.

“If anyone missed this event, they need to put it on the calendar for next year because we intend to always have experts who have the latest information and research for caregivers,” said Dardaeu.
